GENERAL
Senior Center Monthly Newsletter
In December, Senior Center staff collaborated with the City of Carlsbad Communications Department
to refresh and relaunch the monthly newsletter. Formerly named the City of Carlsbad Seaside Buzz, the
updated newsletter has been rebranded as the Seaside Insider and will feature graphic images more
aligned with the Carlsbad community as well as enhanced color and format. Starting in January the
newsletter will be distributed beyond the center and throughout the community to expand awareness
and networking of all the programs and activities available at the City of Carlsbad Senior Center.
Senior Center Flooding / Temporary Relocation of Computers to Resource Room
On December 6, the senior center experienced disastrous flooding affecting rooms on the east side of
the building. A flood restoration contractor was hired for reconstruction efforts. The repairs will be
complete as soon as possible. The IT Department temporarily installed three computers and one
printer in the resource room for Seniors who rely on the center’s computer services.
Be A Santa to a Senior Campaign
Holiday gifts were donated by the community and from Jefferson Elementary School "Kids for Peace"
club to distribute to the homebound Seniors program in Carlsbad. On December 18, the second graders
from Jefferson elementary visited the center to perform holiday songs and present these gifts and
cards. Children, parents, and teachers were all present for the joyful sharing of holiday spirit with the
City of Carlsbad’s Seniors.
The L.I.T.E. Program Shares with Seniors over the Holidays
Leadership in Training and Education after school program at the Pine Avenue Community Center
created 400 candy grams for the next door Senior Center. Since the program meets after school,
students delivered the gifts to Senior Center staff to share at the holiday luncheon on Friday,
December 21, 2019. The remaining grams will be shared with seniors that participate in the
transportation services and home meal delivery program. L.I.T.E. students are middle and high
schoolers who participate in the after school program Monday – Friday next door at Pine.
Intergenerational Programs: Painting with Polly
Senior Center volunteer and art instructor, Polly Fukuhara, volunteered to instruct acrylic painting to
the L.I.T.E. students on December 20, sharing her passion for painting while unleashing the inner artist
of the students. This program will parlay into an afterschool program every Wednesday at the Pine
Avenue Community Center at 3 p.m. Polly was enthusiastic and excited about connecting with youth
and injecting creativity into their young lives.
Carlsbad High School Choir Performs at the Senior Holiday Luncheon
On Friday, December 21, 2018 the award-winning Carlsbad High School choir performed at the Senior
Holiday Luncheon and showered the audience with holiday cheer. The new year will bring an
opportunity for them to collaborate with the Seaside Singers in the spring performance.

New Year’s Celebration
Seniors will celebrate the welcoming of a new year on Monday, December 31, 2018 in formal attire
with flair. Marine Corp. Squadron Vipers 169 joined the celebration and the Senior Center Knitting Club

the Senior Center regularly collaborates with them on special projects to show their support of the
tremendous service they provide to protect our freedom.
