REPORT

GENERAL
Age-Inclusive
Teen Teach Tech
High school students from the Pacific Ridge Tech Team visited the Senior Center to assist customers
with their technology needs. They visited the Senior Center Computer Lab 12 – 1 p.m. and had a
waiting list for support. Students helped with your computers, phones, and tablets. Bring your devices
and bring your questions.
Tech Talk with Teens
Sage Creek High School students returned to tune up Seniors tech skills and to review hot tech topics and
free features for all smart devices. In February they reviewed how to update contact lists with pictures, names
and additional information to create a contact.
Health and Wellness
Love Your Heart
On Valentine’s Day the center hosted a “Love Your Heart” Blood Pressure Screening table in
conjunction with the San Diego Live Well campaign. This is an annual event in which organizations from
across the U.S. and Mexico join together to provide FREE blood pressure screenings to the public. Over
70 blood pressure screenings were taken at the Carlsbad Senior Center. In April, the center will offer
monthly
Adult Dances at Pine Gym
Dancing is good for the body and the brain! The Carlsbad Senior Center is now hosting two monthly
dances in the Pine Avenue Community Center premier wood gym floor once a month on Thursday
afternoon and Friday night. The evening dance is a new addition to open up this healthy and fun
activity for working adults who are unable to attend the afternoon dances.
The Carlsbad Cruisers
The active walking club renamed themselves the Carlsbad Cruisers and at 27 strong added Tuesdays to
meet. Walking weekly over 3 miles per hour, the group has decided to participate in the Carlsbad 5000
under their team name “The Carlsbad Cruisers”. The goal is to motivate each other to get moving while
connecting and making new friends while staying active. Everyone welcome and if you are registering
for the Carlsbad 5000, join the team and use the promo code “CRUISERS”.
Education
AARP Free Tax Preparation Services
AARP IRS-certified volunteers are assisting adults 50+ with their 2019 tax returns. They will be available
by appointment through Tuesday, April 14. This is a valued service and support for customers not
comfortable filing their taxes online.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego
February topics featured “Architecture of the Silk Road” including Southeast Asia, India, Persia and the
“Stans”, North Africa and Asia Minor. This was a six-part series led by Diane Kane, an architectural historian
and retired Senior Planner for the City of San Diego.
The Culinary Lab
Adults of all ages become the master of their taste buds while learning the health benefits of creative
meals and fresh grown food! February cooking themes were Mardi Gras French Creole, Peruvian and
Moroccan Cuisine. Classes take place on the Pine Center 2nd floor.
Taking Charge 2020: The Year of the Adult Driver
Successful Aging in Place program offered education and insights from professionals that shared their
expertise on specific aspects of how to age in place successfully with a focus on driving
Technology
Get to Know Your Android
Free workshop presented by CTAP, of the California Public Utilities Commission to teach customers
how to operate the Android’s basic functions, connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices and write text
messages.

Free Forks Over Knives documentary followed by dialogues to review the content and information in
the documentary.
Friday Night Fever March 20, 7–9 p.m., PACC
Sage Creek High School students will host a Spring Fling Prom featuring a live band, food and fun with a
free dance lesson from 6–7 p.m.
Carlsbad 5000, Sunday, March 22, 10 a.m., Carlsbad Village
Carlsbad Cruisers walking club participating in this annual event. The walking club added an additional
day and is also collaborating with the “Walk with a Doc” group that meets at Stagecreek and Calavera
Hills parks to increase their walking schedules.
Program Attendance: February
Over 3,000 customers visited the Carlsbad Senior Center. Room clipboard check-ins were added in
February and room counts continue. It is still difficult to capture the exact attendance numbers, but
7 of 13
staff are making every effort to count everyone that visits the center. Customers are encouraged to
“count” themselves to further validate and justify much needed services and facility maintenance.
