Technology
All About Podcasts
Would you like to enjoy hearing your favorite radio programs on your schedule instead of having to
remember the program’s broadcast date/time? Many radio programs (e.g. NPR’s This American Life)
are available as free downloadable audio files...just like an audio book. Copy them to your portable
device (e.g. smartphone, iPod) and listen at your convenience. Our instructor, Mike McMahon, is a
big fan of podcasts and will give you a practical guide to what it’s all about.
Google Photos – Essentials
Google Photos is free photo software that can help you organize, edit, and share your photos. It is
the logical next step for those who used Picasa Web Albums in the past. Over the past several years,
the feature set of the software has grown and many have now come to rely on Google Photos for
their photo work. Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will demonstrate many of the helpful features of
this software, Oct. 28.
Coming in 2021 or sooner
High school students from the Pacific Ridge Tech Team will shift their onsite tech help to virtual.
Students are planning “how to” videos, lectures and one on one tech guidance appointments.
Upcoming Events
Age-Friendly Carlsbad Workshop, Monday, Nov. 9, 9–10 a.m.
The workshop will review the Age-Friendly Carlsbad initiative, survey results and next steps to build and develop
the final action plan. The workshop invites community input with training on how to use the interactive online
Social Pinpoint Tool which will engage resident participation as the city continues to collect and analyze priorities
and preferences for the plan. With community insight, the goal of the action plan is to implement policies and
programs to provide a livable community that fosters economic growth and enhances the quality of life for
Carlsbad residents of all ages and abilities.
Streaming Video, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2–3:15 p.m., Free
Companies like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and others are shaking up the movie and television industries. Mike
McMahon will present several of the most popular options. Delivered over the internet, these services bypass
traditional film theatres and broadcast/cable television. They are popular because of their easy access (media
streaming devices, computers, phones/tablets). Also important, those trying to “cut the cord” on their
expensive cable-company TV services, are turning to streaming video to lower their costs.
Amazon Alexa Products, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2–3:15 p.m., Free
Amazon has made a big splash with its voice-controlled devices…the Echo, the Dot, and more. Mike McMahon,
