APPROVAL OF MINUTES;
Minutes of the meeting held April 8, 1987, were
read and approved as submitted.
The Carlsbad Youth Theatre grant was discussed. Comments
were made that they have no professional staff and they
are not a non-profit organization. Suggestions were made
to encourage them to hook up with another organization
such as the Patrons or Friends of the Library to improve
quality and to encourage them to look to other sources of
funding.
According to Youth Theatre's budget, $550 will be spent on
the September production with the remainder on their
December production. The motion was made to reduce
Carlsbad Youth Theatre's grant from $2,000 to $550.
The Open Forum was discussed. It was decided that the
Safety Center would be the first choice for location.
Agenda was discussed. There will be an update of the
present program. Public should be given time for input.
The meeting should focus on forming a Friends group. The
name was discussed. It was decided that "Friends" would
be confused with Friends of the Library. Associates of
the Arts Commission and Arts Auxiliary were suggested. At
the forum the information to be presented should include
why form a group, and what will the group accomplish. It
should include objectives which are providing a support
volunteer group, fundraising, disseminating information,
promoting the arts and giving feedback from the
community.
Commissioner Frye suggested that a questionnaire be
circulated at the forum.
Commissioner Bischoff arrived at 4:20 p.m.
Ms. Beardsley reported on the public art projects in the
Redevelopment Area. The Selection Committee recommended
Games Hubbell for the Ironworks. Discussion of the
contract is now in progress and will be submitted to
Council for approval as soon as possible.

May 5, 1987 ARTS COMMISSION Page 2 COMMISSIONERS
The Selection Committee recommended three finalists for
the sculpture, Ellen Zimmerman, Andrea Blum and Robert
Irwin. The Selection Committee will meet again on May 20
to further discuss the site (corner of Ocean and Carlsbad
Boulevard) and review the finalists. It will then be
presented to the Merchants Design Task Force. A contract
will then be presented to Council for approval.
Ms. Beardsley announced that the City has been recommended
by the California Arts Council selection panel to receive
a California Arts Council Artist in Residence Grant.
Artist, Lynn Susholtz will work in the Hope Elementary
School from October through December.
Ms. Beardsley presented the joint San Diego County grant
application to the National Endowment for the Arts. It
requests $5,000 to be matched with $5,000 new corporate
funds to cover administrative costs which were cut from
the 1988 budget. Commissioner Meilach moved that the Arts
Commission endorse the grant application. The motion was
approved.
Ms. Beardsley reported that the San Diego Chamber
Orchestra will perform two Pops Concerts on the Sammis
property sponsored by Sammis and they will sell tickets.
Discussion followed on what the City should ask Hoehn
Motors to sponsor this year. It was agreed in order of
preference to request 1) a similar Pops concert with San
Diego Chamber Orchestra on the Koll property, 2) a "big
band" sound or, 3) Artist in Residence program throughout
the year. The decision will be determined by Hoehn
Motors.
ADJOURNMENT;
