Pasta to generate interest in the concert. Cost for the dinner is $15. Igor
Gruppman and others from Classics Unlimited will come and discuss the concert
and play during the dinner.
Mrs. Beardsley stated that fund-raising for the Pops concert remains a little
over $17,000 received thus far. La Costa Hotel and Spa has offered to donate the
thank-you reception for the major contributors. Mrs. Beardsley suggested the
Commission hold the reception at the end of September. She also stated that the
Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau donated publicity funding for the Pops
concert.
Mrs. Beardsley gave a letter to the Commissioners asking for help in selling
tickets for the Gallery Vista fund-raiser. She stated the Arts Associates Board
has also been asked to help out. All funds raised from this effort .benefit the
Pops concert.
Mrs. Beardsley stated that she has been working with a group that has been
trying to create a North County Public Art Brochure. The North County Tourism
Marketing Group initially agreed to fund the entire project; however, it now feels
it does not have sufficient funds, but has agreed to put $2500 towards the
brochure. The cost to produce the brochure is approximately $4,000.
Mrs. Beardsley also explained to the Commission about volunteering at the
Summer Pops Concert. She stated staff is developing the sign-up list and
encouraged Commissioners to assist if possible. Mrs. Beardsley stated that she
will return with a more complete list at the next commission meeting. She also
asked if a Commissioner would be willing to take on the position of chairing the
volunteers working with the Arts staff. Mrs. Beardsley informed the Commission
that staff was contacting Rotary for its help. She further stated the Arts
Associates was not interested in assisting a great deal in this area with the
event. Mrs. Ladouceur suggested contacting the High School football team to
assist. She also stated that the coaches needed to be contacted before school
lets out in the next two weeks.
David Spencer mentioned that a program of the High School benefits from the
Carlsbad 5000 and asked if the Arts Office could utilize members of a program
of the High School during the Pops Concert in such a way that they would benefit
from contributing their time. Mrs. Beardsley responded that as of now the
concert is still $7,000 short and she did not know if this could be arranged. Mrs.
Beardsley stated she would contact Mrs. Ladouceur regarding contacting the High
School football team.
Arts Commission Minutes - June 3, 1993
Commissioner Batter asked for an update on the Split Pavilion issue before the
State Assembly. Mrs. Beardsley stated that the vote went to the Judiciary
Committee of the Assembly and it was a tie vote. Ms. Batter asked what had
happened since then. Commissioner Wood and Mrs.J Beardsley stated that the
issue was scheduled to go back to the Committee this month.
Fund-Raising Commitee Report
Mrs. Beardsley stated she already reported on this matter. Commissioner
Platner stated she saw an idea for fund-raising in Santa Barbara recently in
which 2x2 squares of sidewalk were sold for $10 for the children to design
sidewalk chalk art. The artwork was judged and prizes awarded. Mrs. Ladouceur
stated that this would be ideal for a wonderful, small festival or could be tied
into another event as a fund-raiser. The idea was discussed and suggestions
were made to look into this in the future.
Arts Education Task Force
Chair Ladouceur reported that the meeting took place on June 1. Discussion was
held on a letter to the PTAs requesting representation of cultural chair persons
on their board. The purpose of the letter was to establish three way
communication between the Arts Education Task Force, the City of Carlsbad arts
programming and the schools.
Make*A*Circus was discussed as an opportunity for the PTAs to participate as a
fund-raiser. Two schools have agreed to participate. The Arts Contest Survey is
in its final stages and will be sent out to various corporations and non-profit
groups that do sponsor arts contest. Mrs. Beardsley further explained that the
purpose of the survey is to find out what is going on so the teachers can plan for
contests, competitions, etc.
The Task Force also discussed the issue of the School District establishing its
own task force because it is mandated to have an arts curriculum in placement.
This has not been accomplished this year, but it is hoped to be in existence next
year.
Discussion also ensued regarding a bi-monthly publication that would have dates
of arts events for teachers and residents of programs and also specific and
special interest articles that the schools might enjoy sharing with parents and
teachers. The next meeting will take place in September.
Arts Associates Report
Arts Commission Minutes - June 3, 1993 4
President Norm Dolnick reported that the artwork, "Theresa, Kristi and Diane",
recently purchased by the Arts Associates has been removed from the La Costa
Plaza Paseo Real site. One of the pieces fell and was damaged and the other two
were very loose and it was decided to remove all from exhibit. The shopping
center is willing to have the artwork put back. The Arts Associates are
exploring alternatives to restore the damaged piece with the Public Art
Coordinator. If the damaged piece cannot be restored, the Associates Board will
decide whether to display the other two pieces.
The Annual Meeting is taking place at the Senior Center on June 21, with a play
reading by Bunny Kacher and Stewart Blaine.
