Arts Office
Present: Commissioners Wood, Batter, Pynes, Chattier, Willis, Platner, Lignante
Workshop began at 4:35.
The Vision
Commissioners discussed the difference between the vision in Commissioner Chartier's
marketing plan and the goals as stated in the Arts Element. Commissioners decided the
current goals and vision are acceptable. The discussion then centered around "Role Model".
"Champions" - Supporters
Commissioners decided to identify and seek out "Champions".
Commissioner Willis asked if the Arts Office had a "product" to .interest people. It was
decided that a "product" was needed first, which should be concrete and visible - a "hub".
Products listed:
Gallery
Sculpture Garden
Arts Office
The "Product"
It was determined that the first step to be taken is to review the Cultural Facilities
specifications taking existing city buildings into consideration along with other opportunities.
Examples included:
Carlsbad Brewery Library
City Hall Church on Carlsbad Village Dr.
Commissioners volunteered:
Laurie Batter
George Willis
Networking
It was also decided that networking with the City Council should continue with
Commissioner Wood in his role as Chair to take the lead with other Commissioners
assisting as needed. It was stated that the Arts Commission should approach the Council
with the majority point of view so as not to be divisive.
Adopt Commission/Committee
Commissioners expressed an interest in adopting another Commission/Committee.

Bus/ness Champions/Contacts

should be the responsibility of the Arts Associates as this is a project this organization is
undertaking. Mrs. Beardsley replied that the focus for the Arts Associates is to promote
business membership in the Arts Associates organization, but this information can be also
useful to the Arts Commission.
Commissioner Chartier stated the Arts Associates were putting the business membership
project on hold until September.
The Commission again addressed the issue of business champions and private champions and
how they are "tied into Carlsbad". It was that these champions needed to be identified.
