HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-11-02; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Arts Commission November 2, 2000 • 4:00 p.m. • Carlsbad Council Chambers The meeting was called to order by Chair Arthur Wood at 4:06 p.m. Present: Commissioners Wood, Held, Willis, Pynes Absent: Commissioners Shaw, O'Meara and Lignante Approval of Minutes: The Minutes of September 7, 200 were unanimously approved. New Business 2001 Community Arts Grants Connie Beardsley explained the applications received by the Arts Office for the 2001 Community Arts Grants contained more requests for arts education funding than from arts organizations. She also reminded the Commission of its policy regarding the funding allocated for the Community Grant programs in which grants for arts education will not exceed 25% of the total amount awarded. She wanted to know if the Commission wished to be flexible with its policy should the panel meet and wish to allocate more funding for arts education projects. Would the Commission be receptive to these recommendations? The Commission stated it would like to see the panel's recommendations to reallocate funding as it deems appropriate but feels the policy should remain unchanged. The consensus of the Commission was to give flexibility to the panel in determining the allocation of grant funds. 3rd Annual Sculpture Garden Exhibition Gallery Coordinator Karen McGuire was tasked with curating the upcoming exhibition which runs from December 15, 2000 through November 30, 2001. The title of the exhibition is "Animal Whimsy" and will feature animal-based sculptures from nine Southern California artists. Commissioner Willis motioned to approve all nine pieces of artwork. Commissioner Held stated she could not support funding this program because there is no definitive measurement of how many people visit the Sculpture Garden in comparison to the amount spent to exhibit the artworks. Mrs. Beardsley explained to Commissioner Held how the funding is obtained for the Sculpture Garden. Dixon Mrs. Beardsley gave the Commission a photograph of the artwork entitled "Aphrodite" along with a copy of the City Council agenda bill and asked the Commission to review it and think of possible sites to place this artwork should the Commission recommend purchase. CITYMGR Q.ft zg o ozD OO RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council request that the Carlsbad Arts Commission evaluate and recommend on the possibility of purchasing a sculpture, titled "Heidi", by T.J. Dixon. ITEM EXPLANATION: Currently the Carlsbad Arts Commission has an established process for evaluating and recommending public art. This evaluation procedure includes a public comment period as well as developing location options. By approving this item, City Council would request that the Arts Commission consider, evaluate, and possibly recommend the sculpture "Heidi" by T.J. Dixon. The juried process resulted in the selection of 65 works of art by 27 artists. CANNON ART GALLERY IN CARLSBAD - NOVEMBER 18- DECEMBER 30. 2000 Second Juried Exhibition showcases an artful array of local talent An adept two-person jury of its peers has selected 27 artists displaying 65 works in a juried exhibition that will be peerless in terms of its eclecticism and multi-faceted creativity. Running November 18 through December 30, the Second Annual Juried Exhibition at the Cannon Art Gallery will bring 2000 to a fulfilling close. "This has been an exciting year for the Gallery, and we hope a gratifying year for the over 700 patrons who visit our artistic niche each week," reports Gallery Coordinator Karen McGuire. Explaining that the exhibition is limited to artists who live, work or have a studio in San Diego County, she notes that 11 of the 27 artists are from North County, including one from Carlsbad. Over 130 artists participated in the competition, resulting in a broad range of creative endeavors in all media, including painting, prints, photography, sculpture and mixed media. From assemblage art to bright- hued water colors, from tiny dolls to large paintings, from functional furniture to abstracts, and from traditional trains to high-tech digital art, the exhibition is certain to have something to stimulate everyone's interest, expand their mind and satisfy their spirit. Meet the artists and artwork The exhibition blasts the myth, "Those who can't do, teach." Many of the selected artists are doers and teachers, and they are exceptional at both. Carlsbad furniture maker Paul Henry, for example, is an instructor at Palomar College. An award-winning artist with an interest in history, Henry will be displaying Pepin the Short from a recent show in which he depicted various European monarchs in furniture form. In conjunction with the exhibition, will present a lecture in December revealing why he placed his King John cabinet in the corner, and other insights. Details of his talk and that of exhibition artist Jeanne Dunn will be in the December newsletter. Dunn, who teaches at SDSU, is displaying her pear paintings at the exhibition. The artwork of Oceanside artist James Aitchison graces the private collections in many homes the country. He also created the cover and illustrations for three publications byjaimy Gordon. It is fitting that Joseph Bennett creates assemblage pieces, as he himself reassembled his life ; after ten years as a psychiatric social worker, Bennett relocated to southern California to explore his creativity. Donald Blanchard's photographs are beautifully composed to evoke feeling and understanding. He likens a photographer to an alchemist "deceiving the eye into believing in a likeness of the real world." Rosemary Alice Boost teaches at The Children's School in La Jolla and other educational institutions. She also served as artist-in-residence for the San Diego and Chula Vista school districts. Solo exhibitions, galleries and museums have been the venues for Encinitas artist Diane Breitwieser- Stacey, whose arts education began at the La Jolla Museum of Art. Native San Diegan Reed Cardwell is not only a painter but an animation artist who worked for Walt Disney Feature Animation. He believes his six years in animation training has helped influence the current direction of his drawings, paintings and three-dimensional work. "Edible Books High/Low Tea" is the intriguing title of one of writer/artist Judith Christensen's publications. She is a first-time exhibitor at the Gallery, but not a stranger to our community, being the recipient of a 1999 Community Arts Grant to create a bookwriting project in local schools. Vistan Virginia Lukei is the only second-time Gallery exhibitor, but this year will mark a departure from her first year's paintings. "I am entering mixed-media painted sculptures I call cones," Lukei says, adding that she was happy to participate again. "The Gallery is a beautiful space. I feel it offers good exposure and a nice opportunity in North County. I love it." Fellow Vistan David Messick agrees, that "the space is nice" and feels the Gallery is a good place to display his painted icons, some of which are at a gallery in St. Louis and a venue in Chicago. A third Vistan, Cleda-Marie Simmons, will be exhibiting large abstract paintings. studied privately in Madrid for seven years and has had one-woman shows from 1954 to the present. Moving northeast, Peter Mitten of Fallbrook, who teaches sculpture and drawing at Palomar College, has not yet been to the Gallery to see where his wall piece in cast and fabricated aluminum will be displayed. "I can't wait to visit," he confirms, noting that he was involved in outside sculpture shows at Holiday and Stagecoach parks in Carlsbad during the late 1980s. Other participating artists are Jane Darin, Steven Mack Dilley, Diane Gage, Nilly Gill, C.W. Haney, Roy Jenuine, Greg Klamt, Dottie Korn-Davis, Candy Kuhl, Jane Laze row, Jim Machacek, Betty Martinez, Sally Moretta and Judith Parenio. More information about the artists and their works will be available at the Second Annual Juried Exhibition opening November 18. A reception kicking off the exhibition will be held on that day from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Gallery. A look at the jurors A juried show is only as good as its jurors. For this significant exhibition, the Carlsbad Arts Office was fortunate to enjoy the professional services of two of the area's best: Robert Perine and Mark Elliot-Lugo. An artist and writer, the multi-talented Perine has written several books, short stories, plays and musicals. His contemporary water colors and drawings repose in and private and corporate collections nationwide. Elliot-Lugo is visual arts coordinator for the well-known Earl & Birdie Taylor Library in Pacific Beach. As a seasoned juror, he believes that the selection process is based on knowledge and intuition. "Certain works always stand out as being exceptional, and some are harder to decide," he explains. Each of you will be able to make up your own mind when you visit the Gallery this fall. And if you want to put your money where your mind is, you're in luck: most of the works are for sale.
