HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-11-07; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Arts Commission November 7, 2002 • 5:30 p.m. • Carlsbad Council Chambers Chair Pynes called the Meeting to order at 5:40 p.m. Present: Commissioners Hill, Pynes, Held, Willis Absent: Commissioners Shaw, Rutledge, Lignante Approval of Minutes: The Minutes of September 5, 2002 were unanimously approved. New Business Presentation of Public Art Design Concept for the Northwest Community Park Artist Kim Emerson presented her concept - the flowers of Carlsbad. Six flower designs will be placed in six different locations throughout the park. Each flower design is made of concrete and covered with mosaic tiles and stands 8 ft. tall by 14 inches wide. The artist is also considering the idea of adding historic stories regarding each flower to the artwork. Ms. Emerson is working with a bridge engineer on the design/construction of the artwork. Carlsbad resident Julio Ramirez stated he would like to see the children of this community involved within the art aspects of the park and is willing to help. Chair Pynes replied she would like to review this idea. Commissioner Willis said he liked the idea of community involvement. On motion by Commissioner Hill, the public art design concept for the Northwest Community Park was unanimously accepted. Discussion on Commission Responsibilities The Arts Commission asked Arts Manager Peter Gordon to research and then draft a policy that looked at the roles and responsibilities for an Arts Commissioner. Issues to be covered include attendance at meetings, services on subcommittees, etc. Public Comment No public comment was given. Committee Reports Chair's Report Chair Pynes reported that the recently held Boards and Commission dinner was a very nice event. The Arts Commission meetings have been changed to 5:00 p.m. Arts Office staff will be hosting a "volunteer thank-you" reception on December 14, before the Juried Exhibit opening. Coastal Rail Trail Report Commissioner Hill reported that San Diego artist Alber de Matteis has been chosen as the artist for this project. He will return to the Committee in the near future with a design proposal. Arts Education Report Chair Pynes reported that the Community/School Arts Education Committee is working on arts advocacy this year. The next meeting is scheduled for December 11. Manager's Report Arts Manager Peter Gordon reported the Tapestry Exhibit is now on display at the Gallery. The reviews have been very positive. The 4th Annual Juried Exhibit is scheduled to open on December 14. Fifty-four artists were selected to exhibit 83 works of art. A new docent training program is underway. There are approximately 20 people participating. Staff is working on the contract extending the loan of the Niki de St. Phalle lions in Poinsettia Park. The Arts Office received a $1,995 grant from the California Arts Council to present Golden Bough this coming March. Clarification was made regarding the remaining $2,500 in the New Initiatives Grant. The funds are to be allocated to the 2003 New Initiatives Grant Program. The meeting adjourned at 7:06 p.m.
