Home My WebLink About2002-12-05; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Arts Commission December 5, 2002* 5:00 p.m. • Arts Office Chair Pynes called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. Present: Commissioners Hill, Shaw, Pynes, Francis Commissioner Held arrived at 5:10 p.m. Commissioner Rutledge arrived 5:15 p.m. Approval of Minutes: On motion by Commissioner Hill, the Minutes of October 7, 2002 were unanimously approved. New Business Discussion and approval of 2003 Community Arts Grants Commissioner Hill presented the panel's recommendations (see attached) to the Commission. The panel recommended funding several organizations close to their requests. Chair Pynes stated the panel funded the majority of arts education grants with the exception of two. On motion by Commissioner Hill, the Commission unanimously approved awarding the 2003 Community Arts Grants per the panel's recommendations. Public Comment No public comment was given. Committee Reports Chair's Report Chair Pynes announced the opening of the 4th Annual Juried Exhibit. She also reminded the Commission that the volunteer thank you event was being held just before the exhibit opening. The School-Community Arts Education Advisory Committee will meet on December 11 at 3:30 in the Dove multi-purpose room. More people visited the tapestry exhibit than usual. Manager's Report Peter Gordon announced that for the Juried Exhibit, the Gallery will be showing 83 works by 54 artists. Nine of the artists are from Carlsbad. The Independent Film Society Director's Studio will begin at 8:00 pm on December 14. The attendance figures for "three- part-art" for the tapestry exhibit: 1,040 students attended with 240 adults. Twenty-eight classes were from CUSD, 11 were from Encinitas and eight from other schools. The next curriculum corresponds with the Tom Wudl exhibit, opening in February, 2003. Staff has lined up winter programming with two opera programs — the annual lecture series on the San Diego operas begins on January 25, and the San Diego Opera Ensemble will perform at various locations in Carlsbad during the month of February. Mainly Mozart will return with two pianists in concert March 8 and 9, and Golden Bough will perform on March 7. Golden Bough is presented with support from a California Arts Council Touring Grant. Information has been gathered on the roles and responsibilities for Arts Commissioners and will be placed on the January agenda for discussion. Public Art Report The northwest quadrant park (Pine School) and Alga Norte Park master plans will go before City Council on December 17. Arts Associates President Daphne Gilman reported the Associates are working on policies and procedures. Four concerts presented in Spring, 2003. REQUEST: $2,000 DENIED 3) NEW VILLAGE ARTS @ Support for "Shakespeare by the Sea" in Summer, 2003 Newest theatre company in Carlsbad will present 9 free outdoor performances of A Midsummer Night '.v Dreamt. REQUEST: $2,000 APPROVED 4) CARLSBAD PLAYHOUSE- Operating Support for 2003 Season 6 regular season play readings, plus 1 holiday production & 1 at North Coast Repertory Theatre. Only North Coast organization regularly presenting new works by local writers. All artists receive stipends. REQUEST: $2,000 APPROVED 5) COAL (Carlsbad Oceanside Art League)-Nine Demonstrations by Professional Artists Nine visual arts demonstration workshops in Carlsbad, open to public and membership, currently above 300. REQUEST: $1,000 APPROVED 6) PATRONS OF THE ARTS (CARLSBAD COMMUNITY THEATRE) - Operating Support for 2003 Season Three productions, 1-2 onstage events and 3-5 sponsored bookings in 2003, most at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. Includes Carlsbad Youth Theatre programs and workshops for children and adults. Directors, designers, musicians paid. REQUEST: $5,000 APPROVED: $4,500 7) NORTH COAST REPERTORY THEATRE / EL CAMINO CREEK SCHOOL - theater residency at new elementary school: NCRT Education Outreach Program will bring 2 theatre professionals to the school to conduct theater exercises and take 60 5th grade students to see a NCRT production in a 6-week program. Teachers will''rajpfra half-day training workshop as part of the project. REQUEST: $1,000 APPROVED 3) VALLEY- MIDDLE SCHOOL Support for choreographer for Musical Theater Showcase using individual student performing arts groups to develop a multi-disciplinary arts performance. REQUEST: $1,000 APPROVED 4) CARLSBAD STRINGS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION @ Support for Maruichi Group at Jefferson School. Carlsbad musician will conduct 20-week program for strings students to develop a Mariachi performing group. REQUEST: $1,000 APPROVED 5) LA COSTA CANYON HIGH SCHOOL DANCE PROGRAM Capoeiro dance project by local artist and high school dance company; 34 sessions, recital and community performances. REQUEST: $1,000 DENIED 7) CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA CLUB Support for choreographer's fee Annual musical production twelve-week rehearsal program with 40 high school students. REQUEST: $1,000 APPROVED 8) CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL DRUM LINE @ Support for percussion instructor/artist in residence to develop new original performance piece for 25 Drum Line student ensemble. REQUEST: $1,000 APPROVED 9) CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA @ Support for PRISM program of one- on-one mentor coaching in strings methodology to address rapid student orchestra growth and range of abilities.
