Carlsbad Arts Commission
October 6,2005
Carlsbad City Council Chambers
Commissioners present: Fran Carrillo, Sherman DeForest, Rita Francis, Gary Hill,
Barbara Iserloth, Ron Juncal
Commissioners absent: Felicia Shaw
Chair Hill called the meeting to order at 9:00am.
Minutes
On motion from Commissioner Iserloth, the minutes for August and September 2005
were unanimously approved.
Report on ArtSplash 2005
Commissioner Ron Juncal reported that the event was getting better and better each year.
The Planning Committee enjoys working together and that shows in the effectiveness of
the event. Saturday night's music event — being a newly added component -- was sparsely
attended but that was not unexpected. Commissioner Juncal's "rock-stacking" area was
very well received with much audience participation. With regard to the street painting,
the committee was pleased that various schools that had been visited during the year
came back and participated. Sponsorships were also up this year.
Public Art Selection Committee for Learning Center
Commissioner Iserloth was assigned, with Commissioner Juncal as a back-up.
Discussion of "The Arts and Social Capital" Article
Issues discussed included the decrease of participation in creating art in our current
society, the Cannon Art Gallery s program, and the impact of the Split Pavillion issue.
Commissioner Reports
Commissioner DeForest reported that he enjoyed going to ArtSplash with his
grandchildren. He also suggested that Carl Herman be one of the artists invited to give a
presentation to the Commission.
Commissioner Juncal reported on his attendance at the CVBA's "mixer" to raise money
for their downtown sculpture project and his visit to the Sioux City Arts Center.
Commissioner Iserloth put forward the idea that the Commission might meet in
community settings such as the Gowland Meeting Room to encourage the public to attend
and participate more in the meetings.
Commissioner Carrillo reported on the Arts-in-Education meeting. She said the teachers
were interested in participating more in ArtSplash. Karen McGuire gave a preview of the
year's upcoming exhibitions at the meeting.
Commissioner Francis reported on the 2005 Plein Air Brunch. She said it was sold out
and a very beautiful and successful event.
Commissioner Hill reported that the Chamber of Commerce is organizing a fire hydrant
art-painting contest in the Village, and was looking for local artists and sponsors. He also
mentioned the Connecting Community Place and Spirit II meeting coming up on
November 2nd.
Manager's Report
Peter Gordon reported that Heather Pizzuto had been hired as the new Library Director
and that the Arts Office's annual Volunteer Party was scheduled for Friday, October 21st.
Meeting adjourned at 10:25am.
