Carlsbad Arts Commission
February 2, 2006

Commissioners Present: Rita Francis, Barbara Iserloth, Gary Hill.
Felicia Shaw, Sherman DeForest
Absent: Commissioners Ron Juncal and Fran Carrillo
Chair Hill called The Meeting to Order at 9:00 a.m.
Minutes
On motion by Commissioner Iserloth, the Arts Commission approved the January 5, 2006
Minutes. Commissioner Shaw abstained.
New Business
Artist Christopher Lee presented his artwork design concept for Fire Station No. 6 (see
attached handout).
On Motion by Commissioner DeForest, the Arts Commission approved the design
concept and requested staff places the proposal on display for public input.
Commissioners' Reports
Commissioner Iserloth reported she had attended the Community Arts Grant recipient
Young Playwright's and Old Globe Theatre project.
Commissioner Francis reported she had received invitations from several Community
Arts Grant recipients to attend their performances/projects. She also attended the San
Diego Symphony Bach concert. A recently held Family Open Studios article appeared in
the San Diego Union Tribune.
Commissioner Shaw reported that the San Diego Con Vis would be sponsoring a cultural
tourism summit at the end of March. She will send this information to Arts
Commissioners.
Chair Hill reported on various announcements: 2006 Community Arts Grants,
Masquerade Carnivale for the Carlsbad Village and Business Association, COAL
opening, and an Arts Partnership.
Chair Hill further briefed the Commission on the future "city center" vision of arts and
culture facilities.
The Commission requested that city staff make a presentation on the city center at the
next Arts Commission meeting. The Commission further stated it feels it is its
responsibility to advise the City Council on the arts and culture aspects of the city center
and to gather information on such for the city from Carlsbad citizens.
Manager's Report
Peter Gordon announced the upcoming Aviara Park opening, the new gallery exhibition
El Ojo Fino, and reminded the Commission about the upcoming opera lectures and opera
caravan.
Due to a staff conflict, on motion by Commissioner Shaw, the Commission cancelled its
March meeting.
Meeting adjourned at 10.05 a.m.
