I. Minutes for Approval
On motion by Commissioner Carrillo, the Arts Commission approved the June 1, 2006
Minutes.
II. New Business
Presentation - New Village Arts Theatre
Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, gave an overview regarding the New Village Arts Theatre
move to the old Bauer Lumber Company building. Mr. Gordon stated that on September
26, 2006, the Carlsbad City Council had approved the lease with the Carlsbad
Redevelopment Agency. The fee for one year is $1.00. The Council vote was 4-1
(Mayor Lewis-No).
Commissioner Hill stated that he felt support of the New Village Arts Theatre would
encourage visitors to go to dinner and shop in the Village before going to the
performances and thus bring new energy and dollars to the Village. He also hoped that
the community will support NVA in their new venue. He also said the arts community
needs to be more proactive in asking for cultural programs and additional arts venues in
the future.
Presentation on the 2006 ArtSplash festival
Commissioner Juncal gave an overview of ArtSplash 2006:
- approximately 40,000 people attended
- skim boards by artists sold at silent auction
- Monies were raised for school programs, but he wasn't sure how much and how
it was going to be distributed.
Money for next year is now in reserve
- Graffiti art really took off - teenagers were very interested
No parking fees
- Totally free event and profit was realized
- Surf museum - surf history of Carlsbad - nice piece to ArtSplash
- Taste of Carlsbad was a success and was the perfect marriage with ArtSplash
that presented the best of Carlsbad's food
Beer Garden was a success because of the food
- Wonderful connection of food to ArtSplash along with music and the Fern Street
Circus
Peter Gordon inquired if the funds raised by the Taste of Carlsbad would be added to
overall profit or would a portion of the profits be given to ArtSplash.
Commissioner Hill suggested the artwork might be left on the street for a week after the
event, so that more people could see it. And Commissioner Juncal explained the
system used in San Diego's Little Italy, where the works are done on board, and then
the boards are installed around the neighborhood for a period of time.
Public Comment
There was no public comment.
