Summer Arts Camps
Tonya Rodzach, Community Arts Coordinator-Education, distributed summer camp
brochures and gave a PowerPoint presentation on the 2007 Summer Arts Camps
Program.
Ms. Rodzach responded to Commission inquiries regarding number of children in
summer arts camps, scholarship availability, and stated that the Club Pelican camps
could possibly be held at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon when there is a nature center
available. She stated that Val Brown, Video Production Manager, had already video
taped summer arts camps activities several years ago and that the video was shown on
the quarterly report and during a recent State of the City address.
The Commission suggested that a video of summer arts camps be available for citizens
to view on the City's Internet site.
Mrs. Balas, Carlsbad resident, addressed the Commission and acknowledged the
success of the Summer Arts Camp Program. She showed the Commission a painting
that her daughter had done during last year's Summer Arts Camp. Mrs. Balas
suggested that an incentive such as a discount of 10% could be offered when a sibling
or friend registers at the same time.
2007 TGIF Jazz Concerts
Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, distributed the announcement cards for the 2007 season
of TGIF Jazz in the Parks concerts to all Commissioners. He informed the Commission
about the two concerts that will be held at Pine Park and that extra shuttles had been
scheduled for Poinsettia Park and Calavera Hills Park.
Mr. Gordon also informed the Commission that Carlsbad Magazine (aka Wheelhouse
Media) was partnering with the Arts Office to publish the 2007 TGIF Jazz program and
the sale of the ads for that publication.
Mr. Gordon added that Furnishings 4 Less had donated some extremely impressive
prizes to this year's Opportunity Drawings organized by the Carlsbad Friends of the
Arts.

V, Committee Reports
Commissioner DeForest asked Mr. Gordon about an exhibition entitled "Sun Works"
organized and toured by NASA. Mr. Gordon said he had been in contact with the
organizers and the big problem to possibly bringing the exhibition to the Cannon Art
Gallery was the time frame: The Gallery is booked through 2008 and much of 2009 and
the exhibition is not touring for that length of time.
Commissioner Carrillo informed the Commission that she had attended the Americans
for the Arts Conference in Los Angeles and distributed materials to the Commission
from the Conference regarding Arts and Business/Economy.
Commissioner Iserloth reported on her visit to San Diego's ArtWalk where 400 artists
had participated. She informed the Commission that on September 8-9, in Seaport
Arts Commission - 2 - June 7, 2007
Village, there would be another ArtWalk. Ms. Iserloth stated that the Plein Air Brunch
was a great success and spoke about the auction and lecture.
Commissioner Juncal brought the Commission up-to-date on the recent Imagine
Carlsbad meeting. Mr. Juncal stated that preparation was underway for the next
ArtSplash with lots of ideas in the creative brainstorming stage, and that chalk art is
solidly established as an art form. Mr. Juncal will be demonstrating rock stacking at the
upcoming Club Pelican.
Commissioner Fox spoke about the upcoming "On Your Own Time" exhibit at the
William D. Cannon Art Gallery.
Commissioner Hill reported that the City Council is exploring the possibility of bringing in
Robert McNulty and Partners for Livable Communities as a consultant to the City of
Carlsbad.
Mr. Gordon distributed the invitation to the "On Your Own Time" exhibition and
encouraged Commissioners to attend the opening on Thursday, June 21, from 5 to
7pm.
Respectfully submitted.
