Committee Report
1. Commissioners' Reports
Commissioner DeForest suggested that art could be displayed on the large recessed
lights in the outside foyer of the Dove Library. Peter Gordon stated he would pass along
the suggestion to the Library Director.
Gommissioner Carrillo informed the Commission that she had attended the quarterly
Arts-in-Education Advisory Committee Meeting. Lucy Haines, Director Curriculum and
Instruction, Carlsbad Unified School District, spoke about the distribution of state funds
coming into Carlsbad schools. Commissioner Carrillo praised Tonya Rodzach,
Community Arts Education Coordinator, for inviting the Carlsbad Unified School District
to participate in the quarterly meeting.
Commissioner Juncal commented on the great Christmas play he had seen at the New
Village Arts Theatre.
Chairman Fox thanked Peter Gordon and Tonya Rodzach for hosting the recent public
art opportunities presentation that involved representatives from surrounding cities and
local artists. The discussions looked at public art challenges and opportunities in the
area.
2. Manager's Report
Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, spoke about how the Gallery program has been
successfully implementing its Artistic Vision Statement and commended Karen McGuire
for simultaneously establishing the Gallery as a site especially noted for its exhibitions
of folk art and contemporary regional artists. Each exhibition is selected using a
multitude of variables, including planks of the Vision Statement, prospective audiences,
and the relationship to the Three-Part-Art program.
Mr. Gordon said that the Gallery is currently inviting visitors to fill out a survey about
what they liked, how they heard about the gallery, and were they satisfied with their
gallery visit, as part of the city's Performance Measurements program.
In January the Opera Lectures Program starts and rack cards have already been
printed.
The Carlsbad to Karlovy Vary Opera Competition is set for February 23, 2008 and has
