December 4, 2008

I. Call to Order
Chairman Heath Fox called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.
II. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: DeForest, Fox, Francis, Iserloth, and Voll
Commissioners Absent: Millsap
III. Approval of Minutes
On motion by Commissioner Iserloth, second by Commissioner DeForest, to approve
the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held November 6, 2008.
AYES: Commissioners DeForest, Fox, Francis, Iserloth, and Voll
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioner Millsap
IV. New Business
A. Review of and Action on Peer Review Panel recommendations for Community
Arts Grants 2009
Motion by Commissioner DeForest, second by Commissioner Francis, to approve
the following recommendations of the panel for the Organizations/Artist
Partnerships and Arts Education Categories for the 2009 Community Arts Grants:
2009 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY GRANTS -
Organizations / Artists Partnerships
1) Carlsbad-Oceanside Art REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $800 80%
Support for nine (9) professional artist workshops in Carlsbad which are open to members
and to the public.
2) Fern Street Circus REQUEST: $3,000 RECOMMENDED: $2400 80%
Support for performances of its 2009 production (Neighborhood Tour 2009) at the ArtSplash
Festival in September 2009.
3) Museum of Making Music REQUEST: $4,000 RECOMMENDED: 0
Support for a one day lecture, music, dance, and audience participation project plus meeting
and rehearsals.
4) New Village Arts REQUEST: $5,500 RECOMMENDED: $5,500 100%
Support for 2009 season with: five (5) main stage productions, twelve (12) show Off Nights
Series, one (1) Shakespeare event, and numerous special events.
5) Partnerships with Industry / REQUEST: $3,000 RECOMMENDED: 0
Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture
Support for a group of disabled students in Carlsbad to learn about creativity through the art
of sculpting.
6) Patrons of the Arts REQUEST: $8,000 RECOMMENDED: $6,300 79%
Foundation / Carlsbad Community Theatre
Support for facility rental at Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center for a minimum of four (4)
production workshops serving children ages 6-18 (three in the summer and one over sprint
break).
2009 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY GRANTS -
ARTS EDUCATION
1) Aviara Oaks Middle School REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $1,000 100%
Support for beginning and intermediate orchestra students to be coached and mentored
by professional musicians - working as guest artists.
2) Carlsbad High School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $1,000 100%
Band Boosters
Support for four (4) guest artists, instrumental coaches. The Wind Symphony will be
performing at two (2) festivals, three (3) community concerts, and a spring musical.
3) Carlsbad High School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $500 50%
Choral Boosters
Support for a guest choreographer to work with both choirs, Sound Express and Encore, for
their upcoming concerts and competitions.
4) Carlsbad High School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $700 70%
Drama Club
Support for an artist-in-residence for their full-length dance musical in May 2009.
5) Carlsbad High School REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $1,000 100%
Orchestras
Support for both the Chamber and String Orchestra students to be coached once a month fc
six (6) months.
6) Carlsbad High School T.V. REQUEST: $5,000 RECOMMENDED: $500 50%
Support for the CHS Broadcasting of the We Must Remember project and the companion
curriculum. The curriculum will be available to every middle and high school in the state of
California.

7) Hope Elementary School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $1,000 100C/
Support for specialized string instn
will perform twice this school year.
Support for specialized string instruction for the fifth (5th) graders at Hope Elementary, who
8) Jefferson Elementary School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $1,000 100%
Support for the Jefferson Elementary String program, which will provide two (2) forty-five (45
minute group violin classes per week (one class for beginners and one for intermediate
students).
9) La Costa Canyon High School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $700 70%
Dance Program
Support for two (2) twenty (20) hour workshops, one in the spring and one in the fall of 2009.
These will be conducted by two (2) different artists-in-residence, from 2 different places.
10)Montessori Arts and Sciences REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $700 70%
Support for a twenty (20) week outdoor glass and ceramic mosaic mural project that is artist-
led. The project will provide two (2) hours of in-classroom and after-school instruction per
week.
11) Pacific Rim Elementary REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $700 70%
Support for six (6) in-school ballet assemblies; three (3) for grades K-2 and three (3) for
grades 3-5. These assemblies would provide an opportunity for all students to participate am
be exposed to the art of the dance.
12) St. Patrick School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $700 70%
Support for spring semester Readers Theatre program for 4-6 grades.
13) Valley Middle School REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $500 50%
Support for an after-school mosaics program for all interested 6-9 graders. The program will
be twenty (20) hours during five (5) months in 2009, and conducted by the middle school's a
teacher.

Colleen Finnegan, Community Arts Coordinator, reported on the current activities of
the Cultural Arts Office.
