I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Commissioner Schmidt, Chair,
II. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Aquallo, DeForest, Johnson, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll
Commissioners Absent: Friese
III. Approval of Minutes
Motion by Commissioner Voll, second by Commissioner DeForest, to approve the Minutes of
the Regular Meeting held July 5, 2012.
AYES: Commissioners Aquallo, DeForest, Johnson, Schmidt, and Voll
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioner Friese
IV. New Business
A. Recruitment of Jurors for Halloween on Elm (Courtney Enriquez. Housing &
Neighborhood Services)
Courtney Enriquez, Management Analyst, announced that Halloween on Elm will be held on
October 27, 2012 from 1:00-6:00 pm and gave a PowerPoint presentation on the history ofthe
project. She requested two volunteers from the Arts Commission to judge the costume contest.
Commissioners Aquallo and Friese volunteered to be the judges for the costume contest.
B. Report on 2012 Summer Arts Camps (Tonva Rodzach)
Tonya Rodzach, Community Arts Coordinator, gave an overview ofthe Cultural Arts Office
Summer Arts Camps program, which includes Club Pelican and Creative Arts Camp. She
informed the Commission that Club Pelican camps, which focus on art and nature, were
presented in partnership with the Batiquitos Lagoon, the site at which they take place.
Bharathv Thridandam. mother of a camper, spoke to the Commission about the experiences her
daughter had in the last three years. She noted that her daughter's self- confidence had become
stronger because of the camps. Mrs. Thridandam displayed her daughter's visual arts projects.
Ms. Rodzach stated that Creative Arts Camp, held at the Dove Library, focuses on the visual
arts (painting, sculpting) and theatre. She noted that many parents and visitors attended the
final day ofthe camp with students displaying their art and putting on a performance.
Ms. Rodzach informed the Commission that high school students who want to participate in
being a Camp Counselor had to submit a resume and participate in an interview. She noted that
50% of the camp counselors return the following year.
C. Report on 2012 TGIF Jazz season (Colleen Finnegan)
Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, gave a report on the 2012 TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert series. Mr.
Gordon distributed a copy of this year's TGIF Jazz Souvenir Program to the Commission and noted
that wrap-up meetings with various departments and stakeholders would take place over the next
couple of months.
D. Cultural Arts Office - FYI2-13 Staff Goals (Peter Gordon. Arts Manager)
Mr. Gordon informed the Commission that individual staff goals had been assigned as follows:

Expanded programming related to the "Our Lives, Our Stories" exhibition planned for the William D.

Processes and procedures related to the TGIF Jazz program
V. Old Business
A. Update on Public Art Proiects bv Peter Gordon. Arts Manager
Peter Gordon noted that a Public Art Selection Committee would be convened to decide which
artist would create the public art for Fire Station No. 3. Pam Friese was previously selected to
represent the Arts Commission on this ad hoc committee.

There was no public comment.
VII. Commission Reports
A. Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, commented on the recent activities of the arts office staff.
B. Commissioners reported on their recent activities.
VIII. Announcements
Commissioner Schmidt, Chair, informed the Arts Commissioners and public about the following
meetings and events, some of which are free and some of which have paid admissions:

Free events are Friday, 5:30 p.m.; Saturday, 3:00 p.m. at St. Michaels; Sunday, 1:00
p.m. at Magee Park

Animal Crackers puppets received a Community Arts Grant of $1,250
