MINUTES
Carisbad Arts Commission
January 3, 2013
Cultural Arts Office
I. Cali to Order
The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Commissioner Schmidt, Chair.
II. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Lechusza, Friese, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll
Commissioners Absent: DeForest, Johnson
Staff present: Peter Gordon, Arts Manager

III. Approval of Minutes
Motion by Commissioner Lechusza, second by Commissioner Friese, to approve the Minutes of
the Special Meeting held December 13, 2012.
AYES: Commissioners Friese, Lechusa, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioners DeForest and Johnson
IV. New Business
A. Consideration of Donation Offer bv Chuck Carroll
Tina Schmidt, Commission Chair, and Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, presented details of Mr.
Carroll's offer to donate his "Fork" to the city's Public Art Collection.
They also reported that the Collections Advisory Committee, composed of Tina Schmidt and
Sibylla Voll, Arts Commissioners; TJ Dixon, regional public artist; Helen Lessick, public art
consultant; Jerry Tarman, community representative; Jim Gilliam, Cultural Arts Manager for the
City of Encinitas; and Skip Hammann, Director of Carisbad's Transportation Department,
reviewed the donation offer on December 18, 2012 and voted unanimously to reject the offer.
Also attending that meeting were Jessica Padilla, Community Relations Manager for Library and
Cultural Arts; Chuck Carroll, creator of "The Fork"; and Channel 8 reporter Bill Tracy.
After a general discussion of the donation offer, the Arts Commission agreed with the
recommendation of the Collections Advisory Committee and voted not to accept "The Fork" into
the Public Art Collection: motion by Commissioner Markovits, second by Commissioner Friese.

NOES: Commissioners Friese, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll
ABSTAIN: Commissioner Lechusza
ABSENT: Commissioners DeForest and Johnson
NEW BUSINESS - Continued
B. Business Cards for Arts Commissioners
Isabelle Paulsen, Administrative Secretary, reported that the city no longer prints business cards
for its various commissions, except for the Planning Commission. After a general discussion, it
was the consensus ofthe Commission that individual members could purchase their own
business cards, if they so desired. Commissioner Markovits was against this decision..
V. Public Comment
Scott White attended and explained that he had recently retired and returned to Southern
California and was now interested in becoming involved in the arts in this region, whether as a
arts commissioner, board member of an area non-profit, or in some other capacity.
VI. Commission Reports
A. Manager's Report
Peter Gordon stated that a new issue of the ArtsNews, with information about the programs for
the Arts Office would be available soon. He informed the Commission that there wouid be 72
artists displaying works for the Juried Biennial Exhibition from January 20 to March 9, 2013.
B. Commissioner's Reports
The Commission gave an update on their recent activities.

January 10 - Arts-In-Education Committee (cancelled)
January 19 - Opening Reception for Juried Biennial at Art Gallery, 6 - 8:00 p.m.
January 22 - International Guitar Night, Schulman Auditorium, 7:00 p.m.
January 26 - Opera Previews, Schulman Auditorium, 10:00 a.m.
February 3 - Classical Concert, Schulman Auditorium, 2:00 p.m.
February 9 - Family Open Studios, 11 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.
February 9 - This Is Jazz! Lecture with Mundell Lowe, guitarist, 4:00 p.m.

Commissioner Schmidt adjourned the regular meeting of the Arts Commission at 9:54 a.m.
