MINUTES
Cartsbad Arts Commission
June 6, 2013
Cultural Arts Office
REGULAR MEETING
I. Call to Order
Tlie meeting was called to order at 9:01 a.m. by Commissioner Schmidt, Chair.
II. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Alter, Johnson, Markovits, and Schmidt; Aquallo arriving at 9:02
Commissioners Absent:. DeForest and Voll .
Prior to moving to the first item of business. Commissioner Schmidt introduced the newly
appointed Commissioner Alter to those present and invited him to share information about
himself and his interest in the arts.
III. Approval of Minutes
Motion by Commissioner Johnson, second by Commissioner Markovits, to approve the minutes
ofthe regular meeting held May 2, 2013.
AYES: Commissioners Alter, Aquallo, Johnson, Markovits, and Schmidt
NOES: None
ABSTAIN: None
IV. New Business
A. Introductions (taken out of order - see above)
B. Commissioner Markovits suggested that Commissioner Schmidt continue for another
year as the Chair and Commissioner Schmidt accepted the nomination. The
Commissioners were unanimous in their vote and approved Commissioner DeForest to
serve another term as the vice-chair.
C. The Commissioners reviewed their current committee assignments and volunteered for
assignments for next year.
D. The Commission discussed options for meeting locations and agreed to continue to
meet in the conference room at the Cultural Arts Office for the remainder of the calendar
year.
E. The regularly scheduled meeting of this commission falls on July 4, and at the
suggestion of Commissioner Schmidt, the meeting is set for July 11, 2013 provided there
are sufficient items for the agenda.
F. Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto provided an overview of the proposed
amendment to the municipal code as prepared by the Parks and Recreation
Commission which raises the dollar amount of donations that can be accepted by the
City Manager.
G. Gallery Curator Karen McGuire shared the Gallery exhibition schedule for the summer
and fall of 2013.
H. Community Arts Coordinator Tonya Rodzach provided the Commission with an update
on summer camps registration and an overview of program content for each session and
age group.
V. Public Comment
There was no public comment.
VL Commission Reports
A. Manager's Report - Peter Gordon
o The final TGIF Concert program is in process and the TGIF Concert series card
with information on all the summer concerts was distributed.
• The City's retirement event for Manager Gordon will be held on June 26 from 5-7
p.m. at the Cultural Arts Office.
Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto reported that the recruitment for the Cultural Arts
Manager closed on Sunday with 400 applications received for the position. Following
the initial screening,-the tentative date for scheduled interviews is the third week in June.
B. Commissioners' Report
Commissioners reported on their recent activities.
Vll. Announcements
• The Gallery Committee has a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 12 at 4:30 p.m.
• City Council will honor Cultural Arts Manager Gordon with a proclamation at the council
meeting on June 18*^-
• On June 19 the opening ofthe exhibition in the Cannon Gallery and reception is scheduled
from 5-6 p.m.

• Also on the 19**^, the Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk takes place that evening.
• Friday, June 18 is the first TGIF concert ofthe season.
o Saturday, June 22, the New Village Arts Gala is being held at the Batiquitos Lagoon.
• Saturday, June 29 is the Family Open studio from 11-2 p.m. at Library on Dove Lane.
• Thursday, July 11 is the tentative date for the next Arts Commission meeting.
VIII. Adiournment
Commissioner Schmidt adjourned the regular meeting ofthe Arts Commission at 10:47 a.m.
