Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m.by Commissioner Schmidt, Chair. II. Roll Call Commissioners Present: Alter, DeForest, Johnson, Schmidt, and Voll Commissioners Absent: Aquallo and Markovits, III. Approval of Minutes Motion by Commissioner Johnson, second by Commissioner Alter, to approve the minutes of the regular meeting held June 6, 2013. AYES: Commissioners Alter, DeForest, Johnson, Schmidt, and Voll NOES: None ABSTAIN: None IV. New Business A. Commissioner DeForest declined the Vice Chair position and nominated Commissioner Johnson to serve in that capacity for 2013-14. Commissioner Johnson accepted the nomination and the approval vote was unanimous. B. Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto brought the Commission up-to-date on the CIP projects for Library & Cultural Arts including the preliminary timeline which calls for final design and an RFP for bids by July 2014 and actual construction to begin approximately fall of 2014. The Commissioners asked about closings ofthe two library facilities and the potential relocation of Cultural Arts staff and Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto responded that closing dates and times were being worked out with special attention to already scheduled events and programs, including those in the Cannon Art Gallery. C. Community Arts Coordinator Rodzach shared photographs of the sculpture being offered as a donation to the City by Kevin Kelso. Mr. Kelso plans to raise the money to have the sculpture cast in bronze if the City accepts the donation. The Acquisitions Advisory Committee will hold a meeting and provide their recommendations to this Commission at a later date. D. The Arts Commission meeting date for September falls on a religious holiday and after some discussion the commissioners decided to reschedule the September meeting for Wednesday, September 4^^. V. Director's Report A. Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto brought the Commission up to date on the status of the recruitment for the Cultural Arts Director position. B. Community Arts Coordinator Rodzach reported that the public art for Alga Norte Park is progressing with the wall bench 85% complete. The material for the figures has been ordered and could be installed by the end of August or early September, and the entire pool area completed in late October. Chair Schmidt asked if the Commissioners could see some of the art installation first- hand and Ms. Rodzach said she would check with the project manager to see if that could be arranged. C. Gallery Curator McGuire reminded the Commissioners that Betsy Schuiz has been selected as the artist for the public art at Fire Station #3 and she presented the committee with six different options at their last meeting. The committee, which includes two members of the fire department, will meet again to decide on a final concept to bring to this Commission. VI. Friends ofthe Arts Report Commissioner Johnson reporting for the Friends of the Arts spoke about the primary purpose of the Friends organization to raise money for Cultural Arts programs and events and discussed the various ways they accomplish that goal. She added that increasing membership was also a focus for this year and they now have a Facebook page to help market the organization's activities. VII. Commission Reports Commissioners reported on their activities for the previous month. VIII. Announcements • The Carlsbad Music Festival will take place in the village on September 20-22, 2013 • The City has hired a consultant to manage some special downtown projects like the realignment of Carlsbad Boulevard and marking the entrances to the City. • Along with the monthly agenda packet, the Arts Commission will be receiving copies of other Boards and Commission meeting summaries as informational items.
