CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Aaron Alter called the meeting to order at 9:02 a.m.
ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Alter, DeForest, Markovits, Schmidt, Voll and White
Absent: None
Staff and Presenters: Vincent Kitch; Cultural Arts Manager
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes for Jan. 7 meeting were approved (White/DeForest) with two abstentions (Markovits and
Schmidt)
PUBLIC COMMENTS
None
DISCUSSION ITEMS
Manager Kitch presented the Aviara Park public art final design concepts to the arts commission for approval.
Funds were pooled from Aviara Park and Poinsettia Park capital improvement projects and artist Michael
McLaughlin has proposed two 5' sculptures which, if approved, will be installed on opposite sides of the new
stage and shade structures. These sculptures would be based on natural flora and fauna of the area. One
would be titled Myriad & Manzanita and includes a bronze representation of a manzanita bush and a variety
of animals native to the area. The other would be titled California Quail & Cone and includes an oversized tree
cone topped by a large California quail. The arts commission moved, seconded (Markovits/White) and
approved the artwork. The vote was 5 ayes with one abstention (Voll).
Commissioners Sherman DeForest and Sibylla Voll finish their terms as arts commissioners this month. They
were honored for their years of service to the City of Carlsbad with memorial plaques.
CHAIR'S REPORT
Chair Alter attended the Sculpture Garden opening of Leslie and Paul Wilton's Reclaimed, Repurposed,
Remembered. He encouraged all to attend, especially those with children. He appreciated the use of common
items to make whimsical sculptures.
Chair Alter also attended a discussion of Mendelssohn and reported that one of Alter's compositions will
premiere in Athens, Greece soon. He also discussed attendance at a local house concert with an
environmental theme.
He will be in attendance at the city council meeting to support the Public Art Master Plan which will be
presented on Feb. 16.
MANAGER'S REPORT
The Cultural Arts programs temporarily moved to the Senior Center have started with Foreign Film Fridays.
This program will soon be joined with This is Jazz! The Saucy Side of Jazz and Opera Previews. The temporary
transition to a different facility is going well.
The gallery closed on Jan. 31 and will remain closed until the library remodel is completed. The Carlsbad
Cultural Arts Office has a new partnership with Leo Carrillo Historic Park and will be transforming Deedie's
House into a gallery. The office has issued a call to plein air artists to submit work that will be chosen for the
exhibition.
City Council update on the public art master plan was rescheduled to Feb. 16.
Jenna Didier was selected to create public art of the Pine Park capital improvement project.
City Council has chosen two new arts commissioners to fill vacant positions and will soon fill the third position.
The names will be announced after the new commissioners are notified.
The Community Cultural Plan will begin in earnest in March or April. Commissioners are encouraged to
identify key individuals from all areas of the community to interview and invite to community meetings.
COMMISSION COMMENTS
Commissioner White thanked the City of Carlsbad for donating 120 seats for New Village Arts. The newest
show is Emilie and pre -shows start soon. The annual Gala/President's Ball will be held March 5 at Cape Rey
Resort in Carlsbad.
Commissioner DeForest spoke about his recent study of the coloring processes of antiquities. He reported on a
process where the original colors are projected onto the antiquities so that the viewer can see the original
artist intent without damaging the surface of the articles.
Commissioner Schmidt thanked Commissioners DeForest and Voll for their service on the commission and
expressed appreciation for those things she learned from them.
Commissioner Voll reported that her portrait of Bud Lewis was installed in the conference room of the new
desalinization plant.
Commissioner Markovits sat on the selection committee for Pine Park and found the process very challenging.
She also reported that the 2015 Invitational was extraordinary.
