APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes of the Sep. 1, 2016 meeting were approved. (5-0-2)
LIBRARY & CULTURAL ARTS DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Arts Consulting Group (ACG) has completed screening and interviews for the cultural arts
manager position. There is a scheduled meeting with ACG on Oct. 17, 2016 to review a short list
of candidates being considered for finalist interviews in Carlsbad.

Community Arts Grants Peer Review Panel for 2017 Awards: Commissioners Jadhav and
Schmidt
Gallery Advisory Committee: Commissioners Alter, Markovits & White
The regular Nov. arts commission meeting will be adjusted to precede an orientation/ training
for the Arts Commission and Library Board, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 17, 2016. The city
clerk and city attorney will present the training. Both meetings will conclude before 12:30 p.m.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
Pine Avenue Community Park Public Art Update
Gallery Curator reported that Jenna Didier presented her process and history at a community
meeting at the Carlsbad Senior Center on Sept. 12. Attendees were asked for their feedback
about what makes Carlsbad and Pine Avenue Park and the neighborhood special and different.
The community provided feedback which Didier is now using to develop a concept for
presentation to the arts advisory committee on Oct. 27. Didier will return to meet with
members of the community and gain their perspectives as she' finalizes her draft concept design
for presentation to the Arts Commission.
Commissioners expressed a desire to have descriptions of artwork and artists near all public art
pieces. Currently some public art pieces do not offer plaques or other descriptive material.
Visual Arts Overview
Gallery Curator Karen McGuire gave the commissioners an overview of the visual arts in the
City of Carlsbad. The William D. Cannon Art Gallery was opened in 1999 and has presented 85
exhibitions. Annually 36,000 people visit the gallery and 6,500 participate in the arts education .
programs at the gallery. The gallery presents national quality exhibitions with a regional focus.
The Carlsbad Sculpture Garden generally presents local artists, and exhibitions change out
approximately every 6 months. The current exhibition In Our Own Backyard presents artists
John Dupree and Clyde Wickham and will run through April 2017.
Foreign Film Fridays occurs twice monthly autumn through spring and attendance is near
capacity at each showing.
The Art in Public Places program has resulted in 100 works of art in Carlsbad. Currently two
projects are in progress for art which is scheduled to be installed in Aviara and Pine Avenue
Community Parks in 2017.
CHAIR'S REPORT
Chair Alter appreciated the annual boards and commi~sions event hosted by the city. He also
attended the Pine Avenue Park community engagement meeting.
FRIENDS OF THE ARTS REPORT
The Friends of the Arts meet and greet event is going to be held on Oct. 21, 2016 at the gallery
and Gowland Meeting Room. Commissioners are invited to attend and wear their name badges.
COMMISSION COMMENTS
One commissioner attended an event at New Village Arts Theatre, which has received a
community arts grant from the City of Carlsbad, and recommended attendance to the other
commissioners due to the high quality of the productions performed.
