DISCUSSION ITEMS
Community Arts Grants-
Community Arts Coordinator Megan Gilby updated the commissioners on the Community Arts
Grants and the initial evaluation by the Community Arts Grants Panel for awarding grand funds
to non-profit projects and art in schools in 2017. A total of 8 schools and 11 non-profit
organizations are proposed to receive 2017 grants.
TGIF Mission & Vision Statement-
Community Arts Coordinator Gilby reviewed the goals for TGIF Concerts in the Park and the
range of factors that go into selection of musical talent. The commissioners were given the
opportunity to review and provide feedback on the draft TGIF Mission & Vision statement.
Commissioners suggested that the document be dated as a way of setting historic perspective
for those reading the document over time and discussed referencing the Carlsbad Friends of
the Arts (CFA) as a key partner in the success of concert series. It was determined that CFA is
acknowledged in documents distributed with the Mission & Vision statement. Commissioners
expressed support for the proposed wording-"danceable" and "family friendly"-as providing
sufficient clarification to guide music and talent selection from a mission and vision standpoint,
understanding that a number of oth~r factors help to determine the final selection.
CHAIR'S REPORT
Vice Chair Markovits thanked Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto for the opportunity to
meet the applicants for the cultural arts manager position. Commissioner Markovits announced
the opening of the current exhibition Cabinets of Curiosity. The commissioners discussed how
various tastes in art allow the viewer to experience life and art in different ways and lead to
conversation and discussion. The commissioners discussed their desire to have larger and more
comfortable benches in the gallery to give people the opportunity to sit and reflect upon the
art.
