DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEMS Introduction of Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz- Director Pizzuto introduced the new Cultural Arts Manager. Richard Schultz reported on his experience and history and each of the arts commissioners introduced themselves to him. Update on artwork located at Plaza Paseo Real- Director Pizzuto updated the commission on the artwork located at Plaza Paseo Real. The records that have been located suggest that the former Arts Associates, now known as Carlsbad Friends of the Arts, purchased the artwork. Plaza Paseo Rea l's property management company has requested that the artwork be removed to accommodate tenant interests. The Carlsbad Friends of the Arts have reviewed their records and cannot confirm ownership. Director Pizzuto has met with city attorney staff to explore appropriate steps to confirm ownership. The city is proceeding to coordinate the move ofthe artwork temporarily until ownership can be determined. Staff is coordinating with the city's facilities division to safely move the artwork to a temporary location. The city is actively working on locating the artist. Overview of Carlsbad Reads Together- The community-wide reading program known as Carlsbad Reads Together will be held in February this year rather than the traditional April date. The 2017 book selection is Into the Beautiful North by Luis Urrea and offers opportunities for broad programming, expanded through partnerships across library and cultural arts divisions and with other organizations. Programs & Venues Coordinator Keith Gemmell explained the purpose of the program and associated activities, which include an evening with author Luis Urrea, book discussions, concerts, a baile folklorico presentation, films, a presentation by bestselling author Patricia Schultz, youth events, and a month-long service project benefitting the La Posada de Guadalupe Shelter. Community Arts Coordinator Tonya Rodzach reviewed programs organized by Cultural Arts staff, including elements of a community celebration on Feb. 25, 2017 which will include bowling in the stacks, a tin art project and a possible mariachi band. An additional film was added to the schedule for Foreign Film Fridays, Yo Jimbo. These events are funded by the Carlsbad Friends of the Library and the Robert H. Gartner Cultural Endowment. The event is promoted through print material, media releases to news and events sites, social media including an online video, and city e-mail blasts. San Diego Repertory Theatre is also producing this title as a play and will offer a play reading in April, further broadening community access to the title regionally. Commissioner Schmidt recommended that the city contact the Museum of Making Music to explore tie-in activities. CHAIR'S REPORT Chair Alter encouraged everyone to attend the current exhibition in the Cannon Art Gallery, the 2017 Juried Biennial. He attended the artist reception and reported that the exhibition includes a nice cross section of art and artists. He thanked the staff for filling in during the absence of a cultural arts manager. Chair Alter also reported on the Jan. 26 Gallery Committee meeting and wanted to recognize the quality of programming including the recent exhibition Cabinet of Curiosities. He reminded the commission of the continuing discussion with artist Adonna Khare on a mural proposed for the inside wall of the vestibule entrance to the Cultural Arts Office. Chair Alter acknowledged receipt of correspondence from the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation proposing a combined meeting of organizations supporting library and cultural arts programs and services. He supports the idea and reported that more information will be forthcoming. Lastly he expressed a desire for the City of Carlsbad to have a regular music series as can be found in neighboring Encinitas, utilizing the Schulman Auditorium. LIBRARY & CULTURAL ARTS DIRECTOR'S REPORT Over 400 people attended the reception for the 2017 Juried Biennial Exhibition and most of the 35 artists were in attendance despite rain causing some adjustments to the reception. The San Diego Visual Arts Network highly recommended this exhibition. 36 elementary classes and 3 adult groups are scheduled to participate in the Three Part Art program. Community Coordinator Rodzach shared the resource guide with the commissioners. Due to the illness of artist Jenna Didier, the Parks & Recreation Commission meeting originally scheduled for Jan . 23 was rescheduled to February 13 for the presentation of the Pine Ave. Community Park proposed public artwork. Didier is expected to present to the Arts Commission on March 2. If supported by the Arts Commission, the next step will be to schedule the proposed artwork design for presentation to the City Council. Upcoming programs include Foreign Film Friday, Family Open Studios, Opera Previews and This is Jazz! Leo Carrillo Art & History program will resume in mid-February. The City Council received public comment Jan. 24 about obstruction of the Victor Ochoa Mural by large plants on the property of Circle Kat the corner of Roosevelt and Oak. The owners were consulted and the city removed the plants blocking the mural. Both the property owners and those expressing concern for visibility of the mural reported satisfaction with the outcome. Several staff will attend upcoming professional development opportunities including the Grant Manager's network conference March 19-22; the American Alliance for Museums conference May 7-11; and the Americans for the Arts conference in mid-June. FRIENDS OF THE ARTS REPORT Commissioner Schmidt reported on the January election of officers, and congratulated Chair Alter on his election as ist vice president of Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioners reported on their ongoing and new artistic involvement in the community and expressed appreciation for the range and selection of the art displayed in the 2017 Juried Biennial. They also confirmed receipt of the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation correspondence, distributed to the commissioners and offered further support for the proposed exchange. Commissioner White reminded the commissioners of the upcoming Gala for New Village Arts, a City of Carlsbad Community Arts Grant recipient. He also announced the upcoming show, An Iliad. Commissioner Jadhav told everyone of the program for half-off admission to San Diego County museums available through a partnership with Macy's stores. PUBLIC COMMENTS None ANNOUNCEMENTS Scott White and Tina Schmidt announced their respective requests for reappointment to the Arts Commission at the conclusion of their terms in March.
