All members of the committee were present. Member Vehil arrived at approximately 6:45 p.m. In opening remarks, Council Member Pettine thanked the committee members for participating. He explained that he wanted the committee to take a leadership role in Carlsbad by becoming experts in the many aspects of beach erosion and possible solutions. Gene Donovan welcomed the members, introduced himself and staff member Elizabeth Fairchild, then asked members of the committee to introduce themselves. He then asked the committee to nominate a chairperson. Mario Monroy was unanimously elected chairman of the committee. A videotape of the slide show "Beach Erosion: The Problem" was shown to give the committee an overview of Carlsbad's beach erosion concerns. Members discussed suggested procedures for the committee and voted unanimously to accept the attached procedures. In a general discussion, members expressed interest in having presentations from a variety of speakers including Army Corps of Engineers, Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The committee wants to get a historical perspective on the problem, get a survey of the current status of active projects and investigate short and long-term solutions. One of the main items for the September 19 meeting will be setting the goals and objectives for the committee. Elizabeth Fairchild agreed to arrange for a speaker for the September 19 meeting, preferably someone from the Army Corps of Engineers. Agenda packets will be mailed to committee members on Friday prior to the meetings or delivered by Monday afternoon.
