The meeting was unofficially opened at 6:00 P.M. with the intro- duction of the guest speaker, Bill Dyson from SDG&E, who is the person responsible for dredge operations. Also in attendance was Marion Horna, General Manager for Electric Production for SDG&E. Mr. Dyson explained the procedures used by SDG&E to monitor the build-up of sand in. the outer lagoon at Agua Hedionda. He outlined the basic procedures used by the dredge to systemati- cally return the lagoon to a satisfactory depth, and how the sand was transported to the west beach between Tamarack jetties and the fueling jetties in order to minimize the return of the sand by southern drift into the lagoon entrance. In conjunction with these points, he also expounded on the inner lagoon dredging proposed to the Corps of Engineers and how SDG&E could assist with that project. He also made some interesting remarks regarding the sand bypass system in Oceanside and sand retention, in general, on Carlsbad beaches as possibly provided by a groin field or by artificial seaweed. Mr. Horna stressed that SDG&E was anxious to cooperate with the City of Carlsbad on preserving the Agua Hedionda Lagoon and also on giving the artificial seaweed project a try. He said that if the state government had not intervened that the artificial seaweed project would probably be in place. Mr. Dyson's presentation lasted until approximately 8:00 P.M. There was some additional informal discussion by committee members Monroy and Vigil with the meeting completed at about 8:30 P.M. Mr. Monroy expressed a strong desire to have two vacancies filled on the committee by the City Council. The next scheduled meeting of the Beach Erosion Committee is tentatively set for January 9, 1986 at 6:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers. Respectfully submitted, MIKE BROOKS MB:lch
