HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-11-13; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES OF: Beach Erosion Committee DATE OF MEETING: November 13, 2001 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Members: Ed Andrews, John Bettis, Bud Carroll, Richard Erhardt, Bruce Macklin, Robert Prohaska, Norine Sigafoose, Absent: Npne Guests: Mike Howes APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the May 8, 2001 meeting were approved 5-0. 1. COMMITTEE NAME CHANGE: Committee members requested to reconsider their previous recommendation to change the name of the committee. By 5-0 vote, the Committee approved a name change to Beach Preservation Commission. Staff will prepare an agenda bill for City Council noting the name change. 2. 2001/02 CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR: The Committee voted on Chair and Vice-chair positions for the next year. By 5-0 vote, the Committee elected Ed Andrews-Chair and Bruce Macklin-Vice-chair. 3. SANDAG SHORELINE PRESERVATION COMMITTEE: The Committee received the summary report of the November 1, 2001 Shoreline Preservation Committee meeting. The report highlighted the status of the Regional Beach Sand project and The Shoreline Preservation Committee recognized the need to pursue additional funds for future beach nourishment projects. 4. REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATION FOR CONSULTING SERVICES: The Committee considered a draft Request for Qualifications to secure a coastal engineer for as-needed consulting services. By a 7-0 vote the Committee approved a motion to move forward with the Request for Qualifications to secure a coastal engineer for as-needed consulting services. Staff will prepare a request for proposal. 5. OLD BUSINESS: t Opportunistic Sand Program EIR Status - The EIR is in process with Dudek & Associates. Staff will coordinate a meeting with resource agencies. I Jetty Restoration Project Status - The State Lands Commission is processing an EIR for the proposed northern jetty extension. 6. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS: 1 Beach Ecology Education Program - By a 7-0, vote the Committee approved a motion to support a slope planting program at the seawall. Staff will coordinate a meeting with States Parks & Recreation Ecologist, Pamela Higgins. PUBLIC COMMENT: None NEXT MEETING - Tuesday, December 1 1 , 2001 . By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Erosion Committee will be Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building.
