DATE OF MEETING: June 11, 2002
TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m.
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:15 p.m.

Present:Members: Ed Andrews, Bud Carroll, Richard Erhardt, Robert Prohaska, Bruce Macklin
Absent: John Bettis, Norine Sigafoose
Guests: Ray Duncan, Don Jackson, John Campbell and Mike Howes
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the April 9, 2002 meeting were approved 4-0.
1. SHORELINE PRESERVATION COMMITTEE: - Committee Member Erhardt provided a brief
summary of the SANDAG Shoreline Preservation Committee (SPC) meeting of June 6, 2002.
The SPC discussed the evaluation of local regional funding. Member Erhardt provided an
update of his Managing Coastline Hazards presentation. The SPC recommended support of the
workshop and Carlsbad would it host at the Faraday Building.
2. INVENTORY OF HABITAT AND RESOURCES WORKSHOP: - Committee member Andrews
provided a brief status of the June 3, 2002 public workshop that discussed "Inventory and
Evaluation of Habitats and other Environmental Resources in the San Diego Region's Nearshore
Coastal Zone". Member Andrews reported that workshop was held at the Encinitas City Hall and
focused on technology. A consultant has been hired to provide G.I.S. mapping with the ability to
review from a website. This information would be useful to scientists, students and citizens.
Target date for website completion is the end of August, 2002.
3. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The Committee tabled their discussion of Goals and Objectives
until they have a full committee present.
4. MEETING SCHEDULE: No changes at this time to Committee's regular meeting schedule. The
Committee discussed current membership and made a motion to respond the Mayor's letter in
writing with a poll of members desire to continue on the Committee.
5. FIELD VISITS TO BEACH SITES: The Committee set a target date of Augustfip2002 to
schedule a field trip to look at certain areas of the coastline. Staff will provide locations and
logistics for discussion at the July ffj) 2002 meeting. Member Erhardt suggested the Newport
Groin field. #.
6. OLD BUSINESS: Member Carroll distributed copies an e-mail regarding the process and status
of potential Section 227 Projects. Member Carroll would like the Committee to pursue these
efforts with the development of a pilot project.
7. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS: Member Carroll presented the suggestion of 1/i cent sales
tax would raise financing for future beach replenishment

8. PUBLIC COMMENT: Mike Howes distributed copies Caulerpa taxifolia brochure. Eric Munoz
gave a presentation to Council on Caulerpa taxifolia on Tuesday, June 9, 2002.

By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Erosion
Committee will be Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building.
