HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-06-08; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: JUNE 8, 2004 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4.04 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present Members: Ed Andrews, Bud Carroll, Dick Erhardt, Bruce Macklin, Norine Sigafoose and Jon Campbell Absent: Eric Munoz Guests: Ray Duncan, Sally Vigil and Geoff Phillips Staff: Steven Jantz and Belinda Guzman APPROVAL OF MINUTES: By a 5-0 vote, the May 11, 2004 meeting minutes were approved. 1. COASTAL ISSUES/PRIORITIES: The Committee discussed coastal issues/priorities for a future City Council Presentation. This item is follow-up from the visioning workshop for discussion of coastal issues and goals for Council consideration. Member Campbell reminded the Committee of previous discussions to use a methodical approach of first collecting data (such as MOU's) from neighboring beach cities, talk to some City officials for more information and review all the information prior to determining what to discuss in a Council presentation. Staff Member Jantz reported that he has received the information requested from City of Encinitas (MOU with the state) and has requested information from San Clemente. Former member George has previously requested information from the City of Coronado, has not been received yet. Staff Member Jantz has scheduled Jim Stanton, City Treasurer to speak to the Committee at the July 13, 2004 meeting regarding the City's Investment portfolio. The Committee also discussed a recent article titled High marks for water quality scored by 89 county beaches forwarded to the Committee from Council Member Kulchin. An article titled "Sandy Solutions" was also distributed to the Committee. 2. PROGRAM/PROJECT UPDATES: • Seaside Celebration - May 22, 2004 - The Committee manned a booth at the Seaside Celebration distributing Beach Avenues, other literature and talking with citizens about Carlsbad beaches and the Beach Preservation Committee. Member Campbell noted that approximately 20 citizens actually stopped at the booth. Member Andrews noted some of citizens he talked to were unaware that the Beach Preservation Committee existed. • Opportunistic Sand Program - Staff member Jantz provided a brief summary of a field site visit with representatives from the regulatory agencies. Permit applications are projected to be submitted during the month of July. 3. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS: 4. PUBLIC COMMENT: NEXT MEETING - Tuesday, July 13, 2004 ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, July 13, 2004, 4:00 p.m. at the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building, (1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
