HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-05-13; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: May 13, 2008 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. ROLL CALL; Present Members: Ed Andrews, Matt Rocco, Mat Huff, Dick Erhardt, Bud Carroll, Angela O'Hara, Absent Members: Bill Gelfound Guests: Bob Benson, Sally Lyons, and Brian Ketterer Staff: Steven Jantz and Jayme Foster APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the April 8, 2008 meeting were approved 4-0 (Carroll/Erhardt). 1. BEACH WALK EVENT UPDATE: Committee chair O'Hara provided a summary of the Beach Walk event held on April 19th. Comments from the committee included: there were other competing programs on the event day (Carroll), an earlier start with the permit process would provide a better location for next year (Rocco), better coordination with other clean up activities might yield a higher response rate (O'Hara), and a change in the name to what the event will actually be. A few Committee members commented on the fabulous job the San Diego office of the State Parks and Recreation did with special thanks to Brian Ketterer. O'Hara recommends, with the approval of the committee, we continue to do this event and make minor changes in the future to grow on our first experience. 2. CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATION: The Committee reviewed the draft City Council presentation on their past programs and upcoming work efforts. A lengthy discussion was held regarding slides, photos, statements, and what the Committee is hoping to obtain with this presentation. All members of the Committee are asked to attend the City Council meeting on May 20th. 3. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS: Committee member Carroll spoke about being approached by Kirk Burkhart, Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau, regarding the Clean Beach Councils' Certification Program. Staff member Jantz suggested this item be referred to the State. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT: Guest Benson expressed his appreciation for letting him attend and participate in the meeting. ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:41 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building, Room 173-A (1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
