CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present Members: Ed Andrews, Mat Huff, Dick Erhardt, Bud Carroll, Angela O'Hara Absent Members: Bill Gelfound, Matt Rocco Guests: David Garbar, Anne Burns, Brian Ketterer, Claudio Fassardi Staff: Steven Jantz and Jayme Foster APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the May 13, 2008 meeting were approved 4-0 (Huff/Erhardt). 1. CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATION: • The Committee watched the New Community Update Video that featured the Committee and the recent Beach Walk. The Committee was very pleased regarding the overall message, information, and the coverage in the video. • The Committee watched the presentation to the City Council and discussed the council's reaction to it. Committee chair O'Hara spoke about her meeting with City Manager Lisa Hildabrand, which took place prior to the council meeting. Three major areas to work on were discussed: Recommended by Council, the Committee should coordinate with the lagoons and the lagoon foundations. Committee member Huff volunteered to take the lead on this area. The lagoons will have a spot on each month's agenda to discuss updates, current events and other items that pertain to the Committee helping the lagoons. • Recommended by Council, the Committee to research and make advisements regarding off shore reefs and sand retention. Staff member Jantz will do some research on this issue to present to committee next meeting. Guest Fassardi will make a presentation regarding what other cities and countries are doing for sand retention, at the August meeting. • Recommended by O'Hara, a visioning session will be scheduled to revise the scope of the Committee to include the new areas the Council has asked the Committee to advise on. • The Committee will continue to work on the previous goals and ideas along with the new items suggested by the Council. The Committee's continued drive to open communication with the state has prompted another addition to the monthly agenda. State representative, Brian Ketterer, will now have a time to update the committee on all the State's upcoming events and progress. 2. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS: . The Parks and Recreation Commission asked the Committee to give the City Council presentation, with some modifications, on June 16, 2008. . Committee member Huff would like some thought put into a "Beach Meetup" or some other cleanup event that would increase outreach and education to citizens. Committee Chair O'Hara recommended using the Keep California Clean site; they will post for free and donate the materials needed. Staff member Jantz will look into funding. BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE Minutes of June 10, 2008 Page 2 • The Committee asked staff to request the Mayor seek a replacement for Member Gelfound due to his continued absence from the meetings. • Staff member Jantz reminded Committee members about expiring terms and reapplying. 3. PUBLIC COMMENT: • Guest Garber asked about the Committees position on the power plant. Staff member Jantz said the Committee had not discussed it yet. Guest Burns thanked the Committee for letting her attend and for acknowledging ideas and feedback. ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:31 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building, Room 173-A (1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
