CALL TO ORDER: ROLL CALL: Present Members: Absent Members: Guests: Staff: The meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. Matt Rocco, Ed Andrews, Mat Huff, Darryl Hatheway, Jayme Timberlake, Bret Barger, and Angela O'Hara None Claudio Fassardi, Brian Ketterer Steven Jantz and Jayme Foster APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the May 12, 2009 meeting were approved 7-0 (Huff/Andrews). 1. NEW BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE INTRODUCTION: Newly appointed members were introduced to the BPC. • Darryl Hatheway - Member of Surfrider Foundation, Senior Coastal Scientist at AECOM, has lived in Carlsbad 1 year; • Jayme Timberlake - Works at Dudek & Associates as a Habitat Restrorian and has lived in Carlsbad 1 year; and • Bret Barger - Retired from Texaco/Chevron and has lived in Carlsbad 7 years, wants to be involved in the community. 2. SHORELINE AND NEARSHORE DATA SYSTEM (SANDS): Claudio Fassardi, Halcrow Group Ltd., provided a brief presentation on their SANDS software program, a GIS program that stores and evaluates information relative to the coast. The program can show data for wave heights, wave direction, rainfall, water quality, sand grain analysis, dive surveys, coral reef information, and wind stations. 3. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS: • Lagoon Committee Report - Council member Huff and Staff member Jantz reported on Lagoon Days. Each lagoon held activities at different times during the day with attendance highest in the morning. Next year's event will be held around July 18th. • State Parks Report - State representative Ketterer spoke about budget cuts which will greatly affect the Southern California beaches. Day use and camping fees are increasing. Education programs are going well. There will be a decision made on Sept. 16th regarding next year's Beach Fest and its funding. Bluff restoration between Pine to Tamarack has begun and will be maintained for 3 years, funding by the Ag Mitigation program. • Regional Beach Sand Project - Sandag dredging project is in the 2nd phase which includes permitting and final designs, Carlsbad has already paid its share with Ag Mitigation funds. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:16 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Faraday AdftiinistratioaJ^uilding, Room 173-A(1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
