DATE OF MEETING: September 8, 2009
TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 P.M.
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:03 p.m.
ROLL CALL:
Present Members: Ed Andrews, Mat Huff, Jayme Timberlake, and Bret Barger
Absent Members: Darryl Hatheway, Matt Rocco, and Angela O'Hara
Guests: Brian Ketterer, Mike Howes
Staff: Steven Jantz and Jayme Foster
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the August 11, 2009 meeting were approved 4-0
(Huff/Timberlake), with 2 corrections.
1. 2010 CARLSBAD BEACH FEST: The Committee discussed the good things with last year's
Beach Fest event and various issues which could have been done better. These issues
included: increased promotion and notification of the event, more booth participants and the
location of the booths on the beach, possible changes in the hours of the event, increasing
other activities (sand sculpture participants, children's events, soccer, volleyball, or frisbee
exhibition games, food vendors) and possibly charging a fee to booth participants. The
Beach Fest sub-committee is meeting on September 28th at noon to begin preparing for the
May 1, 2010 Beach Fest event. BPC members were encouraged to get involved in next
year's event.
2. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS:
• Lagoon Committee Report -No report.
• State Parks Report - State Representative Ketterer provided a brief status on current
beach related issues: The pay for parking issue has finally been resolved and the
Automatic Pay Machine could be installed later this year, summertime lifeguard program
has ended, the states' budget situation could affect the San Diego region and ongoing
maintenance programs, receipt of a grant for a youth recycling program, Coastal Clean-up
day on Sept. 19th, and the status of an agreement for bluff restoration above the seawall.
• Discuss Goals and Objectives Program - Staff member Jantz suggested the committee
review the program for discussion, and to recommend issues to focus on, at the next
meeting.
3. PUBLIC COMMENT: None
ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING
By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach
Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad
Faraday Administration Building, Room 173-A(1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
