HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-01-12; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: TIME OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CALL TO ORDER: ROLL CALL: Present Members: Absent Members: Guests: Staff: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE January 12, 2010 4:00 p.m. Faraday Administration Building - Room 173A The meeting was called to order at 4:06 p.m. Mat Huff, Bret Barger, Jayme Timberlake, and Matt Rocco Ed Andrews , Darryl Hatheway, and Angela O'Hara Brian Ketterer and Murray Levy Steven Jantz and Jayme Foster APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the November 10, 2009 meeting were approved 4-0 (Barger/Rocco). 1. CARLSBAD BEACH FEST: The sub-committee provided an update/status of the May 1, 2010 Beach Fest. The planning effort is moving along and there will be 2 live stages, lots of booths, artists' with the theme "Voices of the Coast", a sand castle exhibition, and much more. All permits are complete and the sub-committee is focusing on marketing and sponsorship or other fund opportunities at this time. 2. SHORELINE PRESERVATION WORKING GROUP: Staff member Jantz provided a summary of the Sandag Shoreline Preservation Working Group meeting of December 2, 2009. Topics included: a presentation from Dave Cannon regarding sea level rise; Regional Beach Sand Project II (2012) is continuing and money is available in the Agriculture Mitigation fund for Carlsbad's share; and Encinitas asked the group for funding to disperse sand on Moonlight Beach. 3. FY 2010/11 BUDGET RECOMMENDATION: The Committee considered better ways to utilize the money budgeted to them and decided to recommend the proposed FY 2010/11 budget as is. 4 COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION: State Parks Report - State representative Ketterer said there is a projected start date of Feb. 10, 2010 for the Tamarack pay for parking. • City Reorganization - Staff member Jantz explained the City's reorganization; why it happened, what each of the new departments do, and how it will affect the committee. • Committee member Barger asked about sand replenishment. Staff member Jantz brought new members up to speed on current replenishment projects, their projected completion dates and also explained the beach's natural sand movements from summer to winter. 5. PUBLIC COMMENT: None ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, February 9, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building Room 173-A (1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
