HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-02-09; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: February 9, 2010 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Faraday Administration Building - Room 173A CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present Members: Mat Huff, Jayme Timberlake, Darryl Hatheway, and Angela O'Hara Absent Members: Ed Andrews , Bret Barger, and Matt Rocco Guests: Brian Ketterer, Kyle Lancaster, Debbie Jo McCool Staff: Steven Jantz and Jayme Foster APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the January 12, 2010 meeting were approved 4-0 (Hatheway/O'Hara). 1. CARLSBAD BEACH FEST: The sub-committee provided an update/status of the May 1, 2010 Beach Fest. A pre-event party/fund raiser will be held on March 13th at Hensley's, with donated entertainment and beverages. 13 booths, 6 green vendors, and multiple bands have confirmed for the event. Staff member Jantz has arranged a meeting with the Communications/parks Department for help in the marketing of the event, and has also recommended a presence at a City Council meeting to create awareness of the event. Staff is processing a consultant agreement with Dee Forsberg to assist in the planning of the Beach Fest Event. Proposed funding would come from the BPC's consultant budget. 2. SHORELINE PRESERVATION WORKING GROUP: Committee member Hatheway and Staff member Jantz provided a brief summary of the Sandag Shoreline Preservation Working Group meeting of February 4, 2010. Topics included: • Regional Beach Sand Project II (2012) is continuing, however, due to budgetary reasons Oceanside may no longer participate (no official decision yet). • Encinitas/Solana Beach Army Corps of Engineers project is now including a the sea level rise analysis. • California State Parks is hosting a coastal training program entitled "Planning for Climate Change". The training is projected to occur in April. Next meeting on April 1st. 3. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION: • State Parks Report: State representative Ketterer reported the Tamarack pay for parking lot will begin on February 15th; a few campgrounds along the beach bluffs have been damaged by the recent storms and some land has been lost; a sewer force main serving the South Carlsbad Campground will be replaced in conjunction with the reconstruction of the Encinas Creek bridge; and Coke and Stater Bros are sponsoring lifeguards for the upcoming summer season to ensure that all 23 lifeguard towers will be fully staffed. 4.
