HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-03-09; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: March 9, 2010 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Faraday Administration Building - Room 173A CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. ROLL CALL: * Present Members: Mat Huff, Jayme Timberlake, Ed Andrews, Matt Rocco, Bret Barger and Angela O'Hara Absent Members: Darryl Hatheway Guests: Mike Howes, Kyle Lancaster, Brian Ketterer, and John Coates Staff: Steven Jantz, Adriana Alvarez, and Jayme Foster APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the February 9, 2010 meeting were approved 5 - 0 (Barger/Timberlake). 1. CARLSBAD BEACH FEST: The sub-committee provided an update/status of the May 1, 2010 Beach Fest. Staff member O'Hara provided a brief status report of the Beach Fest flyer. Flyer has been approved by State representative Ketterer and has been forwarded to Community Coordinator for the City of Carlsbad, Craddock Stropes for development; flyer should be completed within a week. Entertainment and food is coming along, a wide variety of restaurants have already committed to booths. Staff member Timberlake mentioned that the Ocean Institute is on board for the Beach Fest and they're considering donating a trailer which contains interactive activities, more information will be provided at a future meeting. Staff spoke briefly of possible shuttle services for the event; further discussion is needed on use of possible city parking lot. Pre-event party/fund will be held on Friday, March 12 at 8pm at Hensley's, a percentage of the proceeds will go to the Beach Fest. The sub- committee will meet for a brief meeting on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 to discuss sponsorships/donations. They will provide an update at the next scheduled Beach Preservation Committee meeting. 2. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION: Introduction of Adriana Alvarez to the Beach Preservation Committee staff, she will be taking over administrative duties for Jayme Foster. Shoreline Preservation meeting will be held on April 1st, 2010 and Kyle Lancaster will be the city's representative. State Parks Report: State representative Ketterer reported that the Tamarack concession is in place and there have been no problems, he also mentioned that this is the only location that will allow free parking for the handicap. Work is still being done on the damaged sewer line at the South Carlsbad Campground, in conjunction with the reconstruction of the Encinitas Creek Bridge. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of May. The state is working on the slope restoration project adjacent to the seawall using previously approved Ag Mitigation Grant. Brian Ketterer is working with the Friends of Carlsbad and Carlsbad State Beach as the vehicle to accept and spend the funds on the project. 3. PUBLIC COMMENT: None ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 4:50 p.m. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Building, Room 173-A(1635 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, 92008).
