BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
November 9, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 4:05

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes for meeting of October 12, 2010 were held over to be approved at
December 14, 2010 meeting.
1. 2011 BEACH FEST EVENT: The Committee provided a brief update on the planning of next year's
Beach Fest Event. The event is scheduled for June 4, 2010 and a flyer has been drafted. Next year's
theme for the event will be focused on outdoor recreation.
2. MARINE LIFE PROTECTION ACT: Committee member Timberlake welcomed Eric Brickenstein
from San Diego Coast Keeper. Mr. Brickenstein presented a slide show on potential impacts as a
result of the Marine Life Protection Act for the south coast. He discussed that overfishing is a present
problem and that the MPA's will establish a network of marine reserves throughout the region, which
will only impact 8.7% of California's Coast, the closest to Carlsbad would be in Encinitas (Swami's
Beach). The last commission hearing will be held in December, 2010 in Santa Barbara, CA. The
commercial and sport fishing communities are opposed to the reserves.
3. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION:
• State Parks Report - State Representative, Brian Ketterer mentioned that half of the State
campgrounds and restrooms are closed for routine winter time maintenance.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None

By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:10 pm. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation
Committee will be Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation
Administration Building^799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200, Carlsbad, 92008.
