Minutes for the January 11, 2011 meeting were unanimously approved
1. 2011 BEACH FEST EVENT: Staff member Jantz provided a brief update from the January 31st
planning committee meeting for the 2011 Beach Fest event scheduled for June 4,2011. This year, the
Carlsbad Village Athletic Club (CVAC) is taking a leadership role with coordinating the event. CVAC is
contacting local businesses and corporations asking to provide financial sponsorship support and/or
participate in the event. The event will include an onshore and underwater clean-up activity, coastal
and environmental educational booths, a 1K Beach Walk, local artists and food vendors, live
entertainment, and a sand sculpture by Archisand. Shuttle services are still being discussed. A
number of volunteers have committed for the event however subcommittees are needed for
coordinating food and green vendors. The city Parks Department will distribute electronic notices and
flyers through our E-blasts and in regular park program brochures.
2. SHORELINE PRESERVATION WORKING GROUP: Staff member Jantz provided a brief
summary of the Sandag Shoreline Preservation Working Group meeting of February 3, 2011.
Highlights included: summary of coastal projects in San Diego county currently being managed by the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the continuation of funding for the regional Shoreline Monitoring
Program, an update on the public review of the EIR/EIS for the Regional Beach Sand Project II, and a
legislative update from CalCoast.
3. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION:
• Beach Brochure update - Staff Member Timberlake asked to have an electronic copy of the
Beach Preservation Committee brochure, however staff member Jantz explained that there's no
electronic copy available. This lead to a discussion within the members to look into updating the
brochure and changing some of the wording to reflect a more balanced style of information. The
committee agreed that further discussions are needed with the rest of the members in regards to
updating the BPC brochure, so this subject will be included as a future agenda item.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None
