HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-03-08; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: March 8, 2011 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Parks and Recreation Administration 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. ROLL CALL; Present Members: Ed Andrews, Matt Rocco, Angela O'Hara and Bret Barger Absent Members: Jayme Timberlake and Darryl Hatheway Guests: Linda Petrucci, Brian Andrews, and Pieter de Monchy Staff: Steven Jantz, Kyle Lancaster and Adriana Alvarez APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes for meeting of February 8, 2011 were held over to the April 12, 2011 meeting. 1. SANDAG REGIONAL BEACH SAND PROJECT II: Staff member Jantz provided a status update on the Sandag Regional Beach Sand Project II (RBSPII). Mr. Jantz indicated the EIR/EIS for the project is currently released for public review and comments from interested parties are to be submitted to Sandag by March 14, 2011. City staff from various departments are currently reviewing the docment and will be compiling comments to submit as necessary. Also, the project includes an alternative for additional sand at three regional beach segments with one in south Carlsbad. However, the cost for the additional sand as well as the cost for potential mitigation requirements has an estimated cost of approximately $3.05M. For this reason, staff is not recommending the city purchase the additional quantity of sand. Committee members Timberlake and Hatheway, at the February meeting, volunteered to review and discuss the EIR/EIS for the Sandag Regional Beach Sand Project II, however they were absent from the meeting. Staff will contact them and coordinate any comments they may have with the draft documents and include in the city's comment letter due to Sandag by March 14, 2011. 2. 2011 BEACH FEST EVENT; The Committee discussed the ongoing planning activities for the 2011 Beach Fest Event scheduled for June 4, 2011. Committee members O'Hara and Barger provided a brief update on Beach Fest planning meetings lead by Tammy Urie of the Carlsbad Village Athletic Club (CVAC). CVAC has secured a number of volunteers who are currently coordinating various efforts such as requesting corporate/financial sponsorships, contacting and signing food vendors, scheduling entertainment, reaching out and coordinating with non-profit organizations and green vendors, securing Archisand, and developing a 1K Fun Run on the morning of the event. Beach fest planning meetings will be held every two weeks as CVAC continues coordinating the event. Committee member O'Hara distributed a flyer of the Beach Fest Event and mentioned she's coordinating with Carlsbad Magazine who will be doing a story about the event for the May/June Issue. 3. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION: • Army Corps of Engineers Lydar coastal mapping - Item will be discussed on the next scheduled BPC meeting. • State Parks Report - No State Parks update, since State Representative Brian Ketterer was absent to the meeting. . Date and time of regularly scheduled meetings - The Committee agreed to discuss this item at their April meeting.
