1. 2011 BEACH FEST EVENT WRAP-UP: The Committee discussed the outcome of the 2011 Beach
Fest Event. Attendance of the event was significantly more than previous year's Beach Fest
(estimated attendance will be determined after feedback from vendors in completed). Feedback on the
event was very positive and the Committee agreed to continue supporting the event. A few
suggestions for the following year included keeping the vendor booths closer together and to set up a
welcome booth at the north end of the seawall. Staff member Andrews, resident photographer at the
Beach Fest, presented a slide show of the various snap shots from the event.
2. SHORELINE PRESERVATION WORKING GROUP: Staff member Jantz provided a brief summary of
the Sandag Shoreline Preservation Working Group meeting of June 2, 2011. Two key regional
projects were highlighted: Sandag's 2050 Regional Transportation Plan is currently being circulated
through the public review process. Sandag staff is hosting various public workshops outlining the
future circulation goals and objectives for the region and accepting input from public participation in the
final plan. Sandag is also finalizing the resource agency permits for the Regional Beach Sand Project
II projected to begin pumping sand onto the region's beaches in spring 2012. The project's Coastal
Commission permit is scheduled for Wednesday June 15th. The city submitted a letter of support for
the project.
3. REVIEW FOCUS OF BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE: The committee briefly reviewed their
2010/2011 Goals and Objectives, and had a round table discussion on what the committee should
focus on. This lead to a lengthy discussion, to which each member voiced their opinions on why
they became part of the Beach Preservation Committee. In the end the BPC agreed to continue
supporting the annual Beach Fest event, discuss and debate ideas/proposals which would better
enhance the beach environment, and then take these ideas to the city council for their
consideration and direction. Some of the members expressed an interest in the city having more of a
partnership role with future Beach Fest events. This item will be placed on the July agenda to continue
refining the future efforts of the Committee.
