MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
DATE OF MEETING: July 9, 2013
TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 3:04 pm.
ROLL CALL:
Present Members: Darryl Hatheway, Linda Petrucci, Matt Rocco, Bret Barger, Norelynn Pion-
Goureau and Shelly Sander
Absent Members: Jayme Timberlake
Guests: Tom Cook and Fred Briggs
Staff: Steven Jantz, Liz Ketabian and Adriana Alvarez
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes for the Meeting of November 13, 2012 (Rocco, Hatheway) were approved.
1. INTRODUCE NEW BPC MEMBER:
The Committee welcomed newly appointed member Shelly Sander. Shelly moved to Carlsbad about 1
½ ago and is looking to give back to community. She has 2 sons and is retired from a surgical career.
She’ll be serving a 4-year term.
2. SURFRIDER SURF MONITORING PROGRAM:
Mr. Tom Cook from the Surfrider foundation provided the Committee with a presentation of their
Surf Monitoring Program. It’s a non-profit organization which started in 2012 in response to RBSPII
and it consists of 5 video cameras placed at surf spots nearby the RBSPII receiver sites. Volunteers
provide daily surfer counts and surf quality assessments. Funding for the non-profit will terminate at
the end of this year, however Surfrider isn’t looking to re-fund at this time and will instead keep the
cameras at Fletcher Cove and Imperial Beach.
3. CARLSBAD BEACH & BEACHFRONT FACILITIES:
Mr. Fred Briggs provided the Committee with a manuscript of his concerns with Carlsbad’s Beachfront
facilities, parking and landscaping. He discussed the various issues and provided examples of
improvements and explained how it would enhance Carlsbad’s beaches. The Committee agreed with
most of his concerns. Mr. Briggs will be addressing City Council in a few weeks with the support of
the BPC.
4. BPC MEETING SCHEDULE:
The Committee discussed the meeting schedule and approved a new start time to be at 4pm. Next
scheduled meeting will be Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 4pm.
5. COMMITTEEE MEMBER DISCUSSION:
Beach Fest Summary – The Beach Fest was held on June 15, 2013 and attendance was good. The
Committee will be recommending some changes for next year’s event to the organizing
committee and they also agree that the events attention needs to come back to stewardship.
State Parks Report – Steve can you provide an update on Robin’s State Parks Report? I think I

was too tired at this point and completely tuned out ha! I wrote down her talking about some
slopes, but not sure where the slopes are?! Sorry
6. PUBLIC COMMENT:

ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING
By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 pm. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation
Committee will be Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation
Administration Building, 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200, Carlsbad, 92008.
