March 25, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 4:02 pm.

Minutes for the Meeting of July 9, 2013 (Hatheway, Pion-Goureau) were approved.
1. 2014 CARLSBAD BEACH FEST: Mat Huff, Executive Director of the California Beach Foundation
{CaiBeach), provided a brief update on the planning efforts for the 2014 Carlsbad Beach Fest
scheduled for June 14, 2014. This year, the California Beach Foundation will be taking the lead role
with coordinating the event. The event will include a beach cleanup, coastal and environmental
educational booths, local artist and food vendors, a 1-mile kid's fun run and adult Sk race, surf and
beach chalk art contests, professional sand sculptures, and a bike water pump challenge. The
foundation has been contacting local businesses and corporations asking to provide financial support
and/or participate in the event, however volunteers and sponsors are still needed. Members of the
BPC are supportive of the event and have committed to volunteer for the event.
2. 2014-15 BPC GOALS AND OBJECTIVES PROGRAM: The Committee discussed their 2014-15 BPC Goals
and Objectives Program. The BPC suggested this topic needs considerable review and by consensus
voted for this item be continued to the May 13, 2014 meeting.
3. COMMITIEE MEMBER DISCUSSION:
• State Parks Report-Robin Greene was absent, no State Parks Report.
• Buena Vista Lagoon Restoration EIR-Staff mentioned that the Buena Vista Lagoon Restoration
EIR is currently progressing and that Sandag is expecting to make the draft document available
for public comment in November 2014.
• Staff mentioned that Matt Rocco has resigned from the BPC.
• Member Barger proposed to hold special meetings, whenever there is a previous cancellations of
the BPC. The committee discussed and agreed to the special meetings and to allow conference
calls if necessary.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT:
Fred Briggs provided the Committee with a brief update of his concerns with Carlsbad's Beachfront
facilities, parking and landscaping. He discussed the various issues, he addressed to Council at a July
2013 council meeting. He feels optimistic and preliminary efforts with some of his concerns are
underway at Council.

By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:38 pm. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation
Committee will be Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation
Administration Building, 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200, Carlsbad, 92008.
