HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-01-13; Beach Preservation Committee; Minutes M I N U T E S MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: January 13, 2015 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Parks and Recreation Administration 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:03 pm. ROLL CALL: Present Members: Linda Petrucci, Darryl Hatheway, Bret Barger, Norelynn Pion-Goureau, Fred Briggs, and Amy Ahrendt Absent Members: Shelly Sander Guests: Ellen Wright (Coast News), Rachel and Serena (Rancho Buena Vista High School Students) Staff: Kasia Trojanowska, Liz Ketabian, Kyle Lancaster, and Adriana Alvarez By Committee Consensus, Committee Member Hatheway conducted the meeting as acting Chair. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes for the Meeting of November 18, 2014 (Ahrendt, Barger) were approved. 1. AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON MAINTENANCE DREDGING: Sheila Henika, NRG Engineer, could not attend the meeting. At Ms. Henika’s request, staff member Trojanowska relayed general information about the maintenance dredging program for the western basin of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Dredging started December 31, 2014 and although the NRG has a permit to dredge up to 500,000 cubic yards of sand, the exact amount will be determined in the next couple of weeks. It is estimated that 300,000 cubic yards of sand will be dredged by mid-February. Work is being conducted 6 days a week and the dredging operation may be completed by the end of February 2015. 2. BARRIO AND CARLSBAD VILLAGE MASTER PLAN: Scott Donnell, City of Carlsbad Senior Planner presented a slide show on The Village and Barrio Master Plan by Dover-Kohl. Highlights included: redevelopment of the Albertson’s shopping center, Carlsbad Village Dr. and Grand Ave. sidewalk and street improvements, as well as enhancing mobility for the area. Master plan updates and full report can be found on the city’s website. 3. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION:  Graffiti on the Carlsbad seawall - Staff member Briggs provided the Committee with a manuscript of his concerns with graffiti on the Carlsbad’s seawall. He discussed the various issues and provided examples of improvements and explained how it would enhance the Carlsbad’s seawall. The Committee agreed further discussion is needed, item will be moved to the next scheduled BPC meeting.  State Parks Report – North Coast Sector Superintendent Robin Greene was absent, no State Parks report. - Tamarack Beach Bluff Restoration Update - Staff member Lancaster provided insight on the event held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the bluff along the lower seawall at Tamarack State Beach. The event had a great turnout, about 150 volunteers and over 600 California native plants were planted on the bluffs. BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE Minutes of January 13, 2015 Page 2 4. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200, Carlsbad, 92008.
