HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-03-10; Beach Preservation Committee; Minutes M I N U T E S MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: March 10, 2015 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Parks and Recreation Administration 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:08 pm. ROLL CALL: Present Members: Linda Petrucci, Bret Barger, Fred Briggs, and Shelly Sander Absent Members: Darryl Hatheway, Norelynn Pion-Goureau, and Amy Ahrendt Guests: Matt Huff Staff: Chris Hazeltine, Kasia Trojanowska, Liz Ketabian, Kyle Lancaster, and Adriana Alvarez APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes for the Meeting of January 12, 2015 were moved to the next scheduled meeting. 1. POTENTIAL CITY MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS OF CA STATE BEACHES: Staff members Hazeltine and Lancaster provided a report on recent direction to enter discussions with California State Parks on a potential maintenance and operations agreement for State beaches, exclusive of the campground at South Carlsbad State Beach. Kyle Lancaster, Parks Superintendent, presented a slide show of the potential maintenance and operations agreement for State beaches. Highlights included: facilities enhancements, replacement of picnic tables/benches, the Tamarack/Frazee Coastal Bluff restoration, etc. The discussions on a potential maintenance and operations agreement will include approximately 5-miles of state owned coastline within Carlsbad 2. BEACH FEST UPDATE: Mat Huff, President of California Beach Foundation, provided an update on the planning efforts for the 2015 Carlsbad Beach Fest scheduled for June 13, 2015. Mr. Huff is in the process of securing the necessary permits for the event. Mr. Huff is proposing to hold the event on a privately owned section of the north beach, with the possibility of educational booths at the Ocean Street Sculpture Park. The final program for the event is not formalized yet. Individual members of the committee expressed support of the event, and committed to volunteer with its coordination/execution. 3. AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON MAINTENANCE DREDGING: Kasia Trojanowska, Parks Planner, provided a brief summary on the maintenance dredging of the western basin of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. An estimated total of 300,000 cubic yards of sand will be dredged by the completion of the project. At the beginning of March 2015, the dredging deposition moved from the beach between the cold water and warm water jetties, to the beach south of the warm water jetty. The final step will involve depositing sand on the beach to the north of the cold water jetty. The entire project will be completed by April 15, 2015. 4. COMMITTEE MEMBER DISCUSSION:  State Parks Report – North Coast Sector Superintendent Robin Greene was absent; no State Parks report was provided.  Public Outreach – None BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE Minutes of March 10, 2015 Page 2 5. PUBLIC COMMENT: None ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING By proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:38 pm. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200, Carlsbad, 92008.
