HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-05-08; Beach Preservation Committee; MinutesM I N U T E S MEETING OF: BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE DATE OF MEETING: May 8, 2018 TIME OF MEETING: 4:00 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: Parks and Recreation Administration 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 4:04 pm. ROLL CALL: Present Members: Chair Linda Petrucci, Vice Chair McEachern, Committee Members Briggs, Lang, Prietto and Steindlberger Absent Members: None absent Guests: Lisa Rodman, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation City/State Staff: Aeryn Donnelly-Terrey, Kasia Trojanowska, and Adriana Alvarez APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes for the meeting of March 13, 2018 were approved (6-0-0), on proper motion by Steindlberger and McEachern. PUBLIC COMMENT Linda Schlesinger requested copies of the Beach Preservation Committee Meeting presentations be available to the public before and after the meetings. Ms. Schlesinger also inquired about the status of the North Ponto Beach Access referenced at the Beach Preservation Committee Meeting of Mar. 14, 2017, during the Public Comment. 1. AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES Lisa Rodman, Foundation President, presented a slide show and provided handouts on the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF) activities. Highlights of the presentation included: 1) AHLF maintains 60% of public shoreline access areas at the lagoon, 2) habitat protection, 3) Agua Hedionda North Shore Hubbs Trail bluff restoration, 4) tidal erosion repairs, and 5) Graffiti removal within 24 hours of receiving a report. Ms. Rodman also talked about a bio-survey application that can be downloaded from the AHLF website. The link to the website is aguahedionda.org/community-science. There’s an upcoming lagoon clean-up event scheduled for May 19, Paddle Pull & Sweep. More information on the event is provided on the AHLF website, at aguahedionda.org. 2. STATE OF CA DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & RECREATION ACTIVITIES Lisa Urbach, Interim Sector Superintendent was absent. Therefore, no State of CA Department of Parks & Recreation Report was provided. 3. COASTAL CONDITIONS CONFERENCE – CITY STAFF & BPC MEMBER ATTENDANCE Aeryn Donnelly-Terrey, Parks Planner, provided a recap of the Coastal Conditions Conference attended by her and Beach Preservation Committee Member McEachern, which was organized by the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association. Topics covered during the conference included climate change impacts to the coast; challenges with off-shore drilling in and around northern California; ocean acidification. A variety of other coastal studies were presented at the conference, including the economics of the coast, and how value of coastal property and recreational opportunities are determined. BEACH CLEAN-UP EVENT – CITY STAFF & BPC MEMBER PARTICIPATION (ACTION) After staff’s description of existing local beach clean-up events, members discussed their potential participation in a future beach clean-up event. Participation in such an event was approved (6-0-0), on proper motion by Lang and Steindlberger. Further discussion on this topic will be agenized for future Beach Preservation Committee Meetings. ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING On proper motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:13 pm. The next meeting of the Beach Preservation Committee will be Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Administration Offices, 799 Pine Avenue, Suite 200, Carlsbad, 92008.
