HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-07-26; City Council; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF : Carlsbad City Council (Special Meeting) Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Olympic Hotel Resort and Spa 61 11 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, California DATE OF MEETING: July 26,2004 TIME OF MEETING: 12:30 p.m. Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary met at 12:30 p.m. on July 26, 2004. The meeting was held at the Olympic Hotel Resort and Spa, 61 11 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, California. Mayor Lewis and Council Members Kulchin and Packard were in attend a nce. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. A moment of inspiration, flag pledge, the singing of “God Bless America” and introduction of visitors began the meeting. New Hi-Noon member Mike Schumacher was inducted into the club. CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Ted Owen gave a brief “Who am I” speech. Club announcements and introduction of those participating in the Youth Exchange Program were next on the agenda. Club “fines” were levied. Mark Wyland, Assembly Member, 74‘h District, State of California, was the keynote speaker. Mr. Wyland briefly addressed the local Transnet Tax, stating that he has no position on this local issue. Mr. Wyland spoke about the budget crisis in Sacramento by giving some background and predicting the finalized budget passage in August. He stated that the Governor is providing strong leadership in Sacramento. He also discussed the varying viewpoints that have slowed down the budget process. Mr. Wyland stated that the two main issues for the state’s future are the business climate and education. Mr. Wyland discussed that many children in school do not get the basic skills to succeed. He explained that business must grow in California to provide jobs and the taxes to maintain our state. Mr. Wyland fielded questions from the floor regarding the Governor’s effectiveness, Worker’s Compensation, State Lobbyists, Special Interest Groups, Public Employee’s Retirement and legal/illegal immigration. Mr. Wyland stated that citizens must maintain July 26, 2004 Special Meeting Page 2 public awareness and public involvement in the State’s government.
