PUBLIC COMMENT ON AGENDA ITEMS: None.
City Manager Kevin Crawford welcomed the students to the Fall 2017 Citizens' Academy and
explained the background of Citizens' Academy.
He introduced the City Council to the class. Each Council Member gave opening comments and
expressed their support of the students for taking the time to attend the Academy.
Assistant to the City Manager Jason Haber provided a PowerPoint presentation of the Carlsbad
city government.
City Attorney Celia Brewer gave a presentation on the role of the City Attorney and legal
foundations of government.
Participants took a brief break at 6:48 p.m. and returned to the session at 7:00 p.m.
Superintendent Dr. Ben Churchill provided a PowerPoint presentation on the Carlsbad school
districts, who they are run by and what their relationship is with the City of Carlsbad.
Community Volunteer Coordinator Marie Jones-Kirk spoke about volunteer opportunities in the
city, led the group in a participation exercise, followed by closing remarks.

The Special Meeting of September 28, 2017 was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
