PRESENT: Chairman Jerome Pieti, Julie Almack representing Georgina
Cole, Dr. Howard Harmon, Hunter Cook and James King.
GUESTS: Representatives from Foote, Cone and Belding and Times-Mirror.
DISCUSSION.
Term of Franchise:
Mr. Franklin, Foote, Fifteen year franchise preferred due to replace-
Cone & Belding ment costs and new technological developments.
Mr. Young, Times- Ten year franchise with a renewal period or a
Mirror fifteen year franchise.
Costs to Wire City
for Cable TV:
Mr. Franklin From $8,000 to $22,000 per mile - underground
From $4,000 to $ 8,000 per mile - aerial.
Additional Costs:
Mr. Franklin Preventative maintenance costs more costly than
customer complaint calls.
It was generally agreed 3-5 yearsof operation would be necessary for a
franchisee to break even on operating expenses.
Fees :
Subscriber Fee Based on operating expense, capital costs and
potential number of subscribers. Average today:
$5.50 per month.
Franchise Fee Could be increased as new services are added
to system.
Interconnectability: No possibility of hardware interconnectabi1ity ;
however, interconnectabi1ity via microwave is
possible and the "desirability" of this inter-
connectability could be stated in ordinance.
