Date of Meeting: December 12,1994 Place of Meeting: CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Bizieff called the Regular Meeting to order at 504 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Chairman Bizieff, Commissioners Jones, Schwei, Valenti, and ex-off icio Noble Absent: Commissioner Wanamaker Staff Present: Cynthia Haas, Senior Management Analyst Michael Grim, Assistant Planner COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE ON ITEMS NOT LISTED ON THE AGENDA: There were no requests to address the Board. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: ACTION: Motion by Commissioner Jones, and duly seconded, to approve the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of October 20, 1994, as submitted. VOTE: 2-0-1 AYES: Bizieff, Jones NOES: None ABSTAIN: Schwei Commissioner Valenti arrived at 509 p.m. BUSINESS: 1. Carlsbad Mineral Sprinqs Spa Michael Grim, Assistant Planner, updated the Commission on the status and plans for the proposed Mineral Springs project adjacent to Alt Karlsbad. He stated that the architecture will be European. Each suite will have its own private mineral spa. He showed copies of the blueprints and discussed the amenities to be offered. 2. Walkina Tour Commissioner Jones reported that the Barrio walking tour is still in the planning stage and more details will be available in the near future. When the design has been completed, Ofie Escobedo will attend a Historic Preservation Commission meeting and advise them of the details. 3. Pediment Cynthia Haas, Senior Management Analyst, reported that the dedication of the pediment will be in January. It has been requested that a member of the Historic Preservation Commission speak at the dedication ceremony. She circulated a written history about the pediment, for those new members who were unfamiliar with the details. HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION ,1994 PAGE 2 4. National Preservation Week Several ideas were presented as possible activities for National Preservation Week next May. After discussion, several Commissioners liked the idea of a coloring or essay contest for elementary students, with the week culminating in an awards ceremony at the old Carlsbad Theatre. There was some interest in possibly showing an old Cisco Kid film, since Leo Carrillo was a Carlsbad resident. Commissioner Schwei will locate a copy of the Carlsbad coloring book and come up with some essay topics. She will also contact the Kindles at the Carrillo Foundation to see if a film is available and what other ideas they may have. Commissioner Valenti will contact Tom McMahon, owner of the theatre, to see if something can be worked out. Commissioner Jones will also check into a film. Commissioners should present their ideas on a prize for the contest(s) at the January meeting. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: 5. November Newsletter - Carlsbad Historical Societv Commissioner Valenti stated that he would be attending the next meeting of the Carlsbad Historical Society. He has been asked to consider serving as their Membership Coordinator for 1995.
