HERITAGE TREE SURVEY: P
Assistant Library Director Armour advised that Mr. Wisniewski would not be present to
make his report due to illness in his family. He has completed the survey and is in the
process of marking the locations on the map and compiling photographs of many of the
trees including some historical photos taken at the turn of the century. Mr. Wisniewski
will be on the agenda for the next regularly scheduled meeting of this commission.
Commissioner Christiansen asked if this might be a good time to discuss the current
status of the red gum lerpsyllid problem. He said that he had spoken to the county who
reported that the wasps, which were released ten miles from Carlsbad, were not
reproducing and therefore not providing a satisfactory quick solution to the problem.
The county did provide him with the name of a chemical (Imidacloprid) that has proved
effective in the fight against the lerpsyllid when injected into the trunks of the infected
trees. Commissioner Christiansen said the treatment was not cost prohibitive giving an
example of $50 to treat an 18 inch in diameter tree, and wanted this commission to
make a plea to the City Council for the immediate treatment of any historic trees
infected.
Assistant Library Director Armour responded that the City is developing a Forest
Management Plan for all the trees within the City and this might be a topic for their
cons id e rat ion.
Commissioner Christiansen indicated that he plans to get on the agenda for the Parks
and Recreation Commission meeting to address the subject as well as speak before
the City Council during Public Comment.
