HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-01-09; Historic Preservation Commission; MinutesApproved: , 3;/2l/ao/2-ITEM #2 MINUTES MEETING OF: HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION DATE OF MEETING: January 9, 2012 TIME OF MEETING: 5:30 PM PLACE OF MEETING: City Council Conference Room CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Diaz called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Commissioners Diaz, Garcia, Levy, and Wachter Commissioner Smith Staff Present: Suzanne Smithson, Deputy Library Director APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes ofthe September 12 2011 meeting ofthe Historic Preservation Commission were unanimously approved as submitted (Diaz/Garcia). HERITAGE TREE REPORT: Deputy Library Director Smithson reported that the second phase report had not been on the Park and Recreation Commission agenda as the Street Tree poiicy has been sent back to that commission for review which will take place prior to bringing the Heritage Tree project to the Council. ORDINANCE REVISIONS FOR CHAPTER 2.42 & 22.04 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE: Deputy Library Director Smithson advised that the changes requested by this commission are still in the City Attorney's office for review. There was considerable discussion about the process and Commissioner Dfaz asked if the adoption of an inventory of historical sites would be presented at the same time as revisions to the ordinance and Deputy Library Director Smithson responded that she did not know whether the two items would be on the same Council agenda. HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Page 2 Minutes of January 9, 2012 ^ THIRD GRADE ART CONTEST ^^DRAWING ON THE PAST" SCHEDULE: Deputy Library Director Smithson announced that the City Council meeting on June 5 has been identified for the awards. There was some discussion about testing dates for the schools and the impact that can have on participation. A draft of this year's letter which outlines the schedule for the contest submittals was distributed and by proper motion and vote (Dfaz /Levy) the Commissioners unanimously approved the letter for 2012. PROPERTIES OF CONCERN: No properties have been identified at this time. CARLSBAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATES: Commissioner Levy reported in Commissioner Smith's absence. The Society will be conducting a series of historical presentations atthe Carlsbad By-the-Sea Retirement home during the months of February and March. The series will include one on Oceanside, one on Carlsbad and two on the State of California. The presentations will be open to the public. Commissioner Levy also commented that 7 or 8 third grade classes have already been to tour the Magee House which caused the Commission to speculate that perhaps some ofthe third grade teachers were rearranging their curriculum this year due to a later test schedule this spring. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Deputy Library Director Smithson asked the Commissioners to check the schedule for the November meeting this year as their usual Monday is a City holiday which pushes their meeting to Thanksgiving week. None of those present foresaw any problems with the date. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None present.
